“Gladly incarcerated in Helsinki”

An intriguing conversion of a prison building, used as such as recently as 2002, with a jailhouse theme running through the hotel's services. The old cells have been skilfully re-worked as well appointed and well designed hotel accommodation -- smaller rooms perhaps, but very comfortable. The lower level Jailbird Restaurant is a cosy location for breakfast and other meals. And the hotel has its own tram stop, for the 4 and 4T trams that will get you to the Central Station and other city centre locations in five to ten minutes. Hotel surroundings are quiet, and create a peaceful environment for a relaxing stay. Recommended.

we stayd 2 nights at Hotel Katajanokka. The check-in was easy. Our room, located on the 2nd floor at the end of the floor, was bright. The shower room was well furnished and modern. We really enjoyed our shower in the morning.
the breakfast buffet was a huge choice. there were several fruits, breads, cheese and sausages. try the fresh made sunny side up! unfortunately we had no wifi in our room so we had to go to the lobby hall.
the hotel is also easy to reach. just use a taxi or the tram line no. 4 (station "vyökatu).

How would you like to spend a few nights in a jail ? Try Best Western Premier Katajanokka. Away from the Helsinki waterfront, this place once housed the Helsinki Country Prison closed down in 2002. Today it still retains the flavour within a wonderfully landscaped compound - that has converted 164 cells to 106 luxurious rooms.

The red brick structure and the high compound wall is not the only testimony to the prison surroundings. You actually enter the hotel on Floor 2 while the other floors are downstairs, which also houses a Michelin restaurant and sauna. Food is served with cutleries replicating prison kitchen environment and the butlers are dressed as prison guards. Even the hotel staff is dress the typical prison stripes with numbers on top. Tram stop 4 right at the gate takes you to the shopping street in 5 mins and to the central station in 10 mins.

Overall quite a nice place to stay, but I have reservations to qualify it as one of the Top4 Helsinki hotels as it shows here now.

A few drawbacks - wireless doesnt seem to work due to the thick walls and you have to deposit 15€ for the cable, telephone call is extremely costly at 7€ nobody knows what it means, Size of the room for the same category varies and some rooms have really small windows. There is no pool and most surprisingly they charge you 20€ to book the sauna (free on weekends). Very unlike other hotels in Helsinki.

Give it a try, you might like the uniqueness of such a place of stay.

Room Tip: Room 421 is good. Room 206 on the ground floor is also nice.

Went in February on a short break to a place with a difference and yes it was! Great location to walk around the City, great location to take the ferry to Estonia for the day and a great location to stay!

Room Tip: Helsinki is good to walk but you can also take the half day sight seeing tour and then have more tim...

4 star "jail" is quite expensive but hotels in general are expensive in Finland, therefore, the quality-price relation of this hotel is OK. Rooms are spacious, clean and modern. Equipment in bathrooms is poor (no shower caps and cotton pads) but, again, this problem is common for all hotels in Finland. Location of the hotel is good as well as breakfast and other services provided. I can recommend this hotels for all travellers.

Excellent hotel and location. It is a real prison and inside it really looks like a prison. Very unique experience and atmosphere.
I tested almost all the 4star hotel in helsinki and this is one of the best.

All the rooms are really new in terms of style and furniture

Only reasons why I dont give 5 star is that the breakfast can be improved
