Having just spent 4 nights at the Katajanokka I want to share this very groovy hotel with fellow travellers. Having been an old prision it's full of interesting architectual styles. The rooms are comfy, clean and well appointed for the price. What we loved was the position just a few kilometers from the very heart of Helsinki,,yet so quiet with 3 wonderful little resturants within 5 min walk from the hotel.
The Staff............well they are uber cool young Finns with great smiles and loads of helpful hints. Helsinki is a gem.......

Close to the port, in a nice refurbished installation (a former prison) this hotel gives all confort and wonderful braekfast in a quiet environment at very accesible prices. A place to recommend strongly.

Hotel is an old 19th century Prison and still contains many of the characteristics from that era. The metal stairs where prisoners once walked are adorn the halls and each room are two old prison cells put together.

The room had a double bed HDTV and wonderful lighting. The bathroom was modern, with e full deep sink and an excellent power shower with both large head and spray. Towels were change daily.

The bar and resturant offer great food and drinks at typical Scandinavian prices. However if you want a good pub walk just up the street to The Poseidon. A lovely little bar.

The Tram ran right outside the hotel and at just 2.50 Euros for a single it was great value.

Hotel had a small fitness room and a sauna which was free in the mornings. Ladies from 8-9.45 men from 9.45 to 11. The sauna was great!

The downsides were that the Sauna was only open this time in the morning. The hotel had no WIFI (probably due to the prison wall thickness) but if you have a laptop or Mac they do provide a fast LAN cable for you to connect. I used my Mac as a hotspot so could still use my Iphones as Wifi. Finally little for children to do if you have a family.

All in all a great hotel for a weekend escape and I will certainly be going there soon!

Great hotel! Rooms are actually cells in a prison. Decor is great, keeping the prison feel in a good way. Breakfast was great too. Right on the tram line too!

Quirky little hotel. The former jail. Interesting. Great breakfast. A short walk to the market. The tram is at the end of the driveway. Would stay there again.

We stayed in this hotel last year and had such a great experience that we decided to stay again for a few days before getting a connecting flight to Singapore. This time we had a standard room on the 4th floor. The room was clean, quite spacious and had the most wonderful shower. After using a water saving showerhead at home, the large overhead shower was sheer bliss. The hotel uses its prison theme discreetly without being tacky -tin mugs and bowls and striped shirts. Breakfasts contain a variety of cod foods and hot porridge. be sure to ask for your fried egg to be cooked while you wait and exactly how you like it. We had one evening meal in the Jailbird restaurant and the food was absolutely delicious. Staff in the restaurant and the restaurant are courteous and efficient. We were able to have a late checkout if we desired. The hotel is located on Katajanokka Island which is a short wal from the main city centre or an easy ride on the number 4 tram. e will definitely stay here again on our visits to Scandinavia.

Room Tip: All rooms ae quiet because of the thickness of the walls. Prisons don't have views. Just enjoy t...
