For anyone who loves the music of Sibelius, as I do, this is a "must see". I first came here to see the memorial in 1969 and return to Finland most years. I generally make a trip out here to look at the sculpture and to spend some time in the park.
The sculptress apparently had some metal left over from the construction of the pipes and subsequently used it to make the effigy of the Master's head. I'm so glad that she did as it humanises a starkly beautiful conception.
Helsinki is not a large city and suggestions that this is out of the way or a long walk are awry. I remember in November 1969, when I was 18, striding out with friends in the sleet and being utterly bowled over by this work of art when we got there. It's a nice walk for anyone with reasonable health. Even at my present age, I come here by foot.
You will not be disappointed.
