If you are visiting Aalto house and looking for a good lunch place, then you can't miss this one! If you are staying at Kalastajantorppa and need a destination to walk to, this is a good candidate.

Be warned though, it's not uncommon during lunch time that one has to wait to get vacant table as this is a popular lunch place. Not to get scared though, the wait is usually max 10 minutes as most of the people there are on their lunch break and eat as Finns do: Efficiently and fast :).

I have the priviledge of working quite near the location of La Cantine. 9 times out of 10, I have my lunch at La Cantine. Their lunch menu is very simple: 3 different salads to pick from or one dish that is different each day. The salads are Chevre salad, Chicken ceasar salad and Shrip ceasar salad. The Salads are good and big in portions. Having being a regular customer for a year (or more), there are not that many times that I recall eating same dish twice! (Where do they get all the ideas?).

One can tell that the owner loves cooking: The menu variation, the dishes that are anything but traditional Finnish lunch food, the way the food is put on the plates. The whole deal!

They have also a small selection of deserts (quality over quantity), of which my favorite is the brownie+ice cream.
Aside lunch time, they have afternoon/evening menu (except on Mondays). That menu usually have more choices than the lunch menu but is also more expensive (still fairly priced). The lunch without drinks is approx 10euro.

Found this on trip adviser and gave it a go. Really lovely food. Simple short menu with good range. I had mussels and Bave (steak) followed by delicious choc brownie and ice cream (Devine) the wine was pricey but that seems to be so in Finland generally. It's only 10 minutes walk from the Hilton and much better food than at hotel so strongly recommend!

La Cantine used to have different proprietors and a different name. It was just fine. Now it is even finer. The chef pays attention to the quality and provenance of his ingredients. The menu is varied and imaginative. No wonder La Cantine always seems to be full. I don't know whether they take reservations. Try your luck. Our neighborhood has several cafés and restaurants. La Cantine fits nicely into the scheme without wiping out anyone else. My vol au vent with mushroom filling and potato salad cost just under €10 and was well worth it. Service is friendly and efficient. They also serve wine.

I have only visited once but at the time we had lamb kebab for dinner. It was well prepared, fresh and affordable. The lunch menu seems even better and I will go back for sure.

Nice French Bistro in Helsinki, near "Alvar Aalto house" and the Hotel Kalastajatorppa in Munkkiniemi suburb offered a marvelous meal with fresh salad. The simple list made it easy to choose, either the main daily different main course or "a la carte" salads like chevre chaud salad. The personnel spoke French, English and some Finnish (!), and they were friendly. Maybe the best was the delicious dessert. The atmosphere was plain and simple, first impression was like hmm..., but in the end i was very satisfied, and if I am around one day I'll come back. Prices were very moderate.
