Baana is a good way to cut off the traffic if you are in the centre and want to get to west harbour or the newly constructed parts of the city. It's runs in old railway line grotto.

There used to be a railway that ran right across the city of Helsinki. That got torn out a few years back and they decided to put a pedestrian and bike lane right there where it used to run. Very handy.

The baana runs from the center, right behind the railway station past Sanomatalo, the Kiasma modern art museum, the Music Hall, under Mannerheimintie and into this recessed gully really, all the way to the South west and places like Ruoholahti and Heitaniemi. - All nice and safe and quiet for people walking or biking.

Baana is a sort of scenic road that goes through downtown Helsinki. An old railway used to be in its place, but a couple of years ago it was turned into this pedestrian zone. I guess the designers were going for a sort of High Line (in NYC) thing, but they missed their cue. Sure, Baana is very convenient, especially if you're bicycling through the downtown area. It's also stylish, but not charming the way that High Line is. If you're planning a stroll through the center of the city, in Baana you're only likely to get mowed down by a crazy cyclist. There's nothing much to look at either. Some art or planting would go a long way here. Remember that the place is BELOW the street level, so you won't see much. So don't expect much. Maybe someday, but for now Baana feels like a work in progress.

Baana is the new pedestrian zone made on the old railway in Central Helsinki. Its a good way to walk around and enjoy nice garden surroundings. "Baana", is the finnish slang word for a highway.
