This museum seems to have deteriorated slightly over the years but in the three times I have visited I always found something to enjoy. I don't think that art works are supposed to shout in your face and sometimes a visitor has to turn down the volume of their expectations and not demand the latest and greatest. It is after all part of the local culture.
May I recommend that you get a museum card thus minimising disappointment at any particular feature. A one-day card costs E39 which includes public transport for quite a large area including all the trains and if you look at a map that is quite a good deal very good in fact. For two days, E51. You get a very handy guide book as well.
I would say this is the way to go.
Visiting three or four museums and using public transport system will get value for money no problem at all.
PS the restaurant is downstairs and there is a very extensive bookshop.
