Such a jewel - featuring many famous Finnish artists, such as Gallen-Kallala and Edelfelt, and the building is gorgeous. Other events also held here throughout the year, such as film festivals.

As a national gallery of Finland I expected a rich museum with a lot of paintings inside. Unfortunately despite the beautifully decorated building do not expect to spend more than 1- 2 hours there.

it is a classical museum of paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection mainly concentrates (obviously) on local painters, though they do have some french as well.

Every time visiting Helsinki I'm in Ateneum. The first time I didn’t visit the museum because of the nice weather but I was in the restaurant of Ateneum. I just love the place, also to eat and having the coffee in the restaurant. Only this time I felt the restaurant wasn’t the same. The salad buffet seemed to be less and had the same salads on the Thursday and the Saturday. That’s why I had on the Saturday some other lunch but I didn’t get the menu like it was written. It was only some green salad with cucumber, tomatoes and 6-7 really little smoked fishes (too expensive like that) but I was allowed to take some salad and bread from the salad buffet. I also thought the restaurant was more expensive this year. Something was different! I don’t know if the owner is the same… If you take the lunch you have the espresso etc. half of the price. The sweeties are too expensive but that is so in Helsinki!

This is a very good museum, with an exquisite collection of Finnish and Scandinavian art. It also has some Japanese paintings and the current exhibition is about the art displayed in the former imperial palace. You can calmly visit the museum in less than three hours. The Ateneum has the right size, it is neither small nor big. You will not leave the place with a guilty conscience of not being able to view all the exhibitions.
