G.W. Sundmans is located in the older part of the city centre of Helsinki. The house is built in early 19th century. The restaurants is divided in 5 different rooms of different sizes. We were seated in a room with only 4 other tables. This ensured we could have a peaceful dinner. One of the rooms was occupied by a wedding party. This didn't cause any disturbance to the rest of the restaurant.
We decided to go with a 6 course dinner. Even before the first course was brought to the table, we were treated with 4 different amuses. The amuses were fantastic. Trough out our dinner amuses were brought to our table in such a pace it was difficult to keep track. All the courses were just as excellent as the amuses.
I can happily recommend this restaurant for a atmospheric dinner in Helsinki. The food is absolutely Michelin star-quality, even though the restaurant hasn't been awarded with one, yet.
The service was smooth and attentive. The only weak point was when the waitress stressed a bit too much on the wish that our table party of six persons with different allergies and preferences of taste would have the same courses. When one is allergic to fish and the other prefers fish to meat, and the others love meat, this is rather impossible. As a paying customer I should be able to order according to my own wishes and preference of taste. Also the fee for the cloakroom (3€/person) came as a bit of a surprise. It's not very typical in Helsinki to charge customers who have dinner for cloakroom.
