This cathedral is a beauty inside and out. The green domes are pretty unique looking from the outside. They also provide a great upward view once you go inside. The view from the top of these steps is quite nice as well. Worth the stop.

It looks nice and is beautiful inside, worth a visit if you're in Helsinki. There's not much else to do in the city anyway...

Watched a young Russian child get baptised. A beautiful service with mesmerising vocals from priest and a lady coming back with the reprises.

this is a nice big church in the middle of the city. A nice calm place for prayers and silence. Uspenski Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Helsinki, Finland, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos. Its name comes from the Old Church Slavonic word uspenie, which denotes the Dormition.

I attended the church twice, once for an organ recital that was absolutely packed.

I recall that at the last moment a woman bought her three children who cannot have been more than two years of age. They wriggled and cried through the whole performance and spoilt it for others in the vicinity. The Finnish people took it all in their stride stoically.

The traditions of this church are fundamentally different from the ones we are used to in the West and the icon is the one to look out for.

It's the sort of place you just don't walk into in shorts or eating something. It does demand respect and from me that's what it got. Why not just sit there and take in the atmosphere.
