Very interesting museum with plenty of exhibits to see covering all ages of Finnish history. Very reasonable entrance price too and helpful staff.

“Intrinsically Finnish”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

This museum has an indefinable air of Finnnishness about it, which is just as well as it deals with Finland's history and prehistory.

The building itself is an absolute gem right from the bears outside to the top of the spire - as one reviewer said, it looks like a Cathedral. It was built and designed in the national romantic style by Saarinen. The frescos on the vaulted ceilings are a sight to see and are all based on stories from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala. As far as I am aware they are copies of works by Gallen-Kallela.

The exhibits and room are endlessly fascinating and information is given in 4 languages including English.

This is a must on any visit to Helsinki.

“Lost yourself in the finnish history - from prehistoric time until now”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

Take at least 3/4 hours if you want to see the whole museum. This about discovering a civilization, so the interest depends on the period of the history you want to discover or you are curious about. I really enjoyed the 18th/19th centuries part. I wished I'd seen earlier the sami part, before the museum closed. Now I have to go back !

“Enjoyable”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

I entered this thinking it was a cathedral as the building very large and imposing. I only spent a couple of hours and took in the Sami exhibit (loved the video of reindeer herding, setting traps etc), the traditional Finnish costume and embroidery; domestic objects through the years and the pre-reformation religious exhibits. Almost all had explanations in Finnish, Swedish and English. I did not get to see the pre-history or treasury exhibits. The woman at the ticket stand was very pleasant and helpful.
