We walked from Helsinki harbour along the sea front to the Mannerheim museum. As an admirer of Mannerheim it was fascinating to see the house he lived most of his later life. This was a man who sat right in the centre of the cataclysmic events of European history. Service in the Czars army, victory against the Reds in the Finnish Civil War, successfully negotiating a path between the behemoths of Nazi Germany and the USSR to see Finland emerge with independence.Only recently has his contribution begun to be recognised.
