Owner description: Korkeasaari Zoo is one of the few zoos in the world located on an island. A 20 minute ferry (summer) or bus ride from Helsinki city centre will take you to a zoo where you can travel from cold mountain regions to dry steppes and from northern coniferous forests to the tropical rainforest. It is the perfect place to visit due to its natural environment, animals and history. Korkeasaari Zoo is home to 150 animals and 1,000 plant species showcasing the diversity of nature. Korkeasaari Zoo was established already in 1889 and this makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world. Despite the long history and historic surroundings, Korkeasaari Zoo is a modern zoo with a mission to conserve biodiversity. Korkeasaari Zoo breeds endangered species and participates in programs that aim to reintroduce animals to their natural habitats. Free map at the entrance. At least one restaurant open around the year, more services during summer. Outdoor and indoor picnic areas, hut with fireplace.
Useful Information: Food available for purchase, Activities for older children, Activities for young children, Bathroom facilities

We travelled by river barge cost 18 euro's for the return trip to Helsinki centre and entrance to the Zoo, well laid out plenty of animals and birds to see. Food and refreshments available all good quality not junk food..

We visited this zoo in a sunny Friday in May. It was very calm, except for some school groups. It is located on an Island, and there is a lot of "green" or rocky space in between, so at the end, you have not seen so many different species. Although the collection is quite small (I compare with the zoo in Antwerp and Planckendael (Belgium) and Barcelona) it is quite nice. We visited all cages twice (had a whole day to spend...) and in that way, we also managed to see some animals who played hide and seek the first time.
I loved that this zoo is not so "commercial" as the ones I know (with ice cream, popcorn, drinks, balloons or other rubbish sold at every corner). Instead of trying to make people spend as much as possible during their visit, this zoo offers the possibility to bring your own pick-nick (with very nice pick-nick tables and little wooden houses next to the see, free BBQplaces and an indoor picknickplace... This is unseen in Belgium.

There are some places where the kids can play, but this is also quite limited.
We took the bus nr. 16 (Zoo bus) to get there. The bus is for free if you travelling with a kid in a stroller (amazing isn't it), so this is actually the cheepest way. The Zoo bus leaves next to the Central train station (Rautatientori) at parking nr. 8, which is very easy, except if you do not know that there is a bus parking at both sides of the Central train station...

This must be the first zoo I went to by boat, which I loved. The boat leaves from the main market square, very easy to take. The zoo itself has a range of animals, felines, bears, and a tropical part. The living spaces for the animals see to be quite well equipped, natural etc. The zoo is however not so big, and then they were also 'displaying' chickens and rabbits, regular ones, which seemed a bit odd to me. While I was visiting in May, quite some cages and places were empty, maybe because of breeding season.

One of the most charming assets of this unique zoo is that is on an island and you take a very scenic ferry to get to it. The ferry was full of very excited children and teenagers! Price is 18 Euro, I had a Helsinki card so I got a 2 Euro discount. The animals seem to enjoy human visitors, though they have plenty of room to roam they come right up to the edge of the fence, time and time again... Camels, reindeer, swans, deer... Perhaps they were hoping for treats but the Zoo had a clear no feeding policy for tourists. The peacocks roam freely, and as I was there during mating season, they put on a glorious show and you can get lots of up close pictures of their beautiful plumage.

There's a lot of zoos in the world and like me you most proberly been to a few.you know that excitement feeling you get when your at a zoo.you won't get it here.
This zoo is a nice peacefull place that sits on an island.you can take a ferry across.or walk ove the bridge.
The walk around the island is relaxing and peaceful.its that peacefull that most of the animals will be tucked.up in bed sleeping.
If you like taking nice strolls with some wildlife this I a place to go.

The zoo has a Nordic feel to it which is good in its own way
