Original Sokos Hotel Helsinki

It is a nice hotel, clean and in a great location. What was a little disappointing was the lack of information on Helsinki, sights etc at the reception desk. For instance, simple things like a bus/metro map were not available in the hotel, it was necessary to visit the tourist information office. The hotel staff were courteous but did not seem to know much about what was going on in Helsinki.

A good example of this lack of information and a significant irritant was, having eaten in the restaurant for 3 nights (which whilst independent of the hotel is an integral part with access from inside the hotel), we went down on the Sunday evening to find the restaurant closed. It closed at 7.00pm. No one in the hotel thought to say anything or prepare a notice advising guests that the restaurant would close early. When mentioned at the desk, the response was 'it is mentioned on the hotel information page on the television'. It was these less than helpful issues that we found surprising for a hotel of this standard.

We ate in the restaurant attached to the hotel (all except Sunday), which was excellent and reasonably priced. My wife is coeliac and therefore requires glutton free food. The menu for her was extensive and apart from one or two items was the same as for all guests. After eating there on the first night we didn't consider looking elsewhere.

Best part of this hotel is its location. Breakfast is good for nordic visitors, a bit less so for asians. Rooms are quite small but thats Europe. Silent though. Problem big buses cannot come nearby. Staff friendly and helpful, pity in Europe it is no bellboy policy , asians are used to help with big luggages. But location, location, location - only Kamp is better, but that is another category..

Room Tip: Single standard is really for 1 person with not too much luggage

Excellent located - in the city centre - close to Alexanderikatu, Senatsquer, railwaystation, meanwhile - on the cosy quiet street. Good air-condition and good matress ensured good sleep-quality. Breakfast-assortment - reach and various - it's especially usefull by longer stays. Three areas for emprovement: no gym, no morning-sauna and better arrange the breakfast-room. It's too small and the logistic with food is not so good convenient, as in other places.

Only a few blocks from the central rail station and about 5 or 6 blocks from piers. All and all, a real good location. On a walk street with a McDonalds across the street. The hotel is clean, comfortable beds, good bathroom facilities with a courteous and helpful staff. Okay breakfest and I believe 3 elevators. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Request one facing the walk street as they are quieter.

I visit in Sokos Hotel Helsinki in July, and hotel was quit full at this time. I arrived at 9 am, and got my room immediately, what a service! I got a small single-room at 8 floor, and room was very clean and modern. Single-room is also good option for couples, because the bed is size 120. Breakfast is full of everything, but I was wondering where was bacon on that morning? I was having my breakfast at 7.30 am, and then there was plenty of room, but situation is quit different after 9.00 am. Location at Sokos Hotel Helsinki is excellent. Everything is near; shops, restaurants and things to see!

Room Tip: Try to get a room at 7 or 8-floor!

We loved this hotel! It is a 3 min walk from the train station, 2 minutes from the cathedral, 2 minutes from the esplanade and on a pedestrian only lane with shops etc. It also has a very large breakfast Buffett that caters to many nationalities thoughit does get busy and is sometimes hard to find a table. Our room was very large and had sitting area, though this may have been because we had a room for 3. The hotel clerks gave great service and were always happy and responsive. There was also free room wireless and free computer access terminals in the lobby. We would definitely recommend this to friends.
