“Nice Hotel but rooms don't live up to expectations”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2011

The Hotel Location is great, and the entrance, lobby and library room are lovely with great architectural features. The front desk staff were extremely helpful and even printed off some searches from the internet for some music clubs and concerts we had asked about. Its a shame that the rooms don't live upto the entrance! Our room was on the 3rd floor and was an OK size but the wooden floor was very scratched and lots of chips in furniture which gave it a slightly shabby feel. there were some nice features like the armchair and footstool, and plenty of storage. The TV had a strange blurry effect so was OK to check the news but you couldn't watch a film. The bathroom was Ok and had a bath and shower, and plenty of space to store things, but it was a bit scruffy and had mould around the bath.. As other people have mentioned there is extensive building work outside so it was very noisy from about 8am, but there was also a loud humming noise from the courtyard at night (from the non existent air conditioniong?) so you had to keep the window shut and it was very warm and stuffy. The breakfast buffet was nice, the usual selection of eggs, cheeses, fruit, lovely rye bread etc, served in the basement which was cosy but some might think a bit dingy. The hotel was fine overall, and a good location although Helsinki is very small so any downtown hotel will be within 15 minutes or so of the station. The rooms would benefit from a lick of varnish and a good polish up, and aircon, and once the hotel is expanded and building work finished it would be a more comfortable place to stay. I would recommend the Fabian a few blocks across, a bit more money but superior rooms

This hotel was not my first choice when looking for a place in Helsinki but if I ever go back I will definitely stay here again. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. I loved the building, which is very quirky and they have some unusual features like a massage chair in the library! My room was comfortable and clean. They have a sauna for hotel guests but it is only open in the evenings and then the timings for men and women are separate. The only downside of the hotel is the extremely slow internet connection, which makes it difficult to do any real work - if you need to use Skype or anything like that. Hopefully they will sort this out.

The location is good - about a ten minute walk to the main shopping district but actually you are right in the heart of the design district so there are lots of cool shops close by. I really liked this and spent most of my weekend just wandering around them and soaking up the atmosphere.

I thoroughly recommend this hotel for your stay in Helsinki!

Just spent 8 nights at the Hotel Linnaa. There are a number of points to recommend on a stay there; the location we found to be ideal. The tram is a block away which opens up the whole city to any exploration. There are 2 or 3 good restaurants within easy walking distance and a grocery within a stone’s throw. (Not recommending throwing stones. Finns are too civil for such) The staff is attentive and very engaging. The included breakfast was certainly well done with fresh fruit and an array of good ways to start the day. But, as is usually the case, there are a couple down-sides too. We had a nice room but found the bathroom virtually dysfunctional. I found it curious that there was no electric outlet in the bathroom which means the hair dryer is to be used at the desk in the bedroom where I used my electric razor as well. I came to suspect that there was no electric outlet in the bathroom for a very good safety reason as it is nigh on impossible to shower in the tub without inundating the floor. The glass shower guard is woefully inadequate in preventing the floor from flooding when one takes a shower which means an electric appliance in the bathroom would be dangerous to say the least. Further just getting in or out of the tub required a gymnastic ability. Not a pleasant room experience in this regard. Further the Linnaa is undergoing some hefty construction (tripling the number of rooms with new construction next door over the next year or so). The hammering and general pervasive racket commenced daily at 8:00AM or so and banged on thru the day until 4:00PM or so. Not suitable for trying to take an afternoon nap we seniors relish. In summary, the Linnaa is a fine stay and convenient location managed by an attentive staff but with some negatives. We would probably stay there again should we return to lovely Helsinki.

We really wanted to love Hotel Linna. It is a very unique building in an interesting neighborhood in Helsinki. But we booked through Expedia a room that was supposed to be for two people. In fact, when we checked in, we were given a room on the first floor, facing a courtyard with noisy construction, and a bathroom that was accessible for the disabled, so it was one large room with no separation between the toilet, shower and sink. When we complained that we wanted a bathroom with a shower with walls, we were told that there was nothing else, and we could move the next day to a better room. When we asked about moving to another hotel property, we were then told we could move to a smaller room in the same hotel. We did so and asked if we could still move to a larger non-disabled room the next day, but we were told "no", this smaller room was the room we actually booked. It made no sense! If this was the room we booked, why weren't we given it at check-in, and offered the larger disabled room as an upgrade option? The whole process made us feel like we had been downgraded.

OK, but forgetting all that, if this was the room we actually booked, there is no way it is appropriate for two people! We are not large people, but the bed was smaller than a full or double size in the States. Apart from the bed, the room was also too small as a matter of space. It reminded us of small hotels in NYC, but not Scandanavia. It was without question the smallest room we ever stayed in in Europe, and we simply would not stay there again, and we could not recommend it.

Three of us stayed at the Hotel Linna for four nights in July 2011. Initially the hotel seemed a bit ‘out of the way’ and a fair distance from the Esplanade and city centre, but the superb tram service made getting around Helsinki very easy, so nothing was really very far away. The receptionists were consistently friendly and helpful throughout our visit, offering directions and maps, and organising our taxi to the airport.

The weather was unseasonably warm during our stay, which was a delight, but it did make the rooms unbearably hot – the air conditioning couldn't cope with the high temperatures. The hotel was also undergoing renovation/extension work, and the builders started their noisy work before 7am outside our window (which we had to keep open because of the heat). The result: four nights with very little sleep.

Despite the heat, the rooms were clean and comfortable, and the free WiFi was useful, even if you have to stand in the corridor outside your room to get a decent connection! Breakfast was OK, nothing special, but it was irritating to arrive for breakfast to find that none of the tables had been cleared – there was only one poor member of staff rushing around trying to keep on top of food and cleaning – we had to clear a table for ourselves. The hotel didn’t seem very busy, it was just lacking staff. Overall, our Hotel Linna experience was not the greatest, and it was the only negative aspect of an otherwise fantastic holiday in a wonderful city.

In the 80's this place was a disco... The hotel Linna (Castle) is an example of old Jugend style buildings in Helsinki. If you like the style, you should definitely stay in this hotel, as the reception area and breakfast room are finely renovated and preserved with the original style.

You can reach everything in the centre of Helsinki in 10-15 min walk from the hotel.

The rooms are located in a modern section of the hotel. Standard rooms are small but adequate if you don't have a lot of luggage. In the usual Finnish manner, the rooms was clean and well-maintained. However, the window hook was broken so we couldn't keep the window open during the warm night.

Staff was very friendly and helpful but not overdoing it.

After traveling in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, it was so refreshing to check-in at a hotel that knows how to be warm and welcoming. It is a small hotel and the staff were consistently warm and charming, always a greeting. Helsinki is a dazzling city for architecture and staying at the Linna lets you see it from the inside out. You can spend hours appreciating the architectural details of the main building. The guest rooms are not in the old building, however, and lack the charm. They are perfectly adequate, well maintained, and comfortable. The hotel appears to have 3 saunas. One is located in the tower and I was told it is only available for private functions. There are 2 saunas in the basement but only one that was being used during the summer months. They have different hours for men and for women. A nice way to relax. Breakfast was a nice combination of fruit, cereal, eggs, sausage as well as some Scandinavian treats like herring and pickles.

The location is perfect for seeing the sights. We walked from the Ferry landing to the hotel and also walked downtown to see the sights. A great base-camp for seeing Helsinki.
