“Perfect location in Helsinki”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014 via mobile

Stayed here for two nights and enjoyed the experience.
The location is perfect, right next to the Helsinki main railway station, the tram stop right in front of the hotel and the buses to the airport leave just across the street.
The building itself is full of history, beautifully preserved.
The double room is on the small side, but cosy and clean. The bathroom also small, but completely adequate. No luxury toiletries.
The beds very comfortable, and with a great pillow menu to choose from, we had very comfy nights.
Breakfast buffet good, loved the small pancakes, but missed more fresh fruit.
All in all, recommend Hotel Seurahuone for exploring Helsinki, and for great transport connections for any business trip.

Staff is OK. Hotel not. I had to change 3 rooms because of the dirty mattress. Even the 3rd one (previously checked by the staff) was dirty too.Hair + big yellow stains on the mattress. When checking out and reporting again that this is unacceptable for a 4 stars hotel the answer was: "Sorry, we go to check it. Thank you for staying,..."

First off I can say the staff at this hotel were friendly and did try their best to accommodate but when our party of work colleagues arrived there were building works going on. This meant being woken up at 5am or 6am every day which is not ideal. In addition my room faced the main street and central station, which is great from a location perspective but not so great as trams run well into the night, at least 1am and they are noisy.
The rooms are dated but large and clean and the breakfast was okay but the bar and restaurant closes early, although their is a great tapas restaurant opposite and 20 yards down on the right is a sports bar that closes at 3am and the ribs and burgers were great.
Good location - too noisy...

Room Tip: Get a room at the back of the hotel otherwise its too noisy

Dear guest

Thank you for your review. Your kind words about service have been forwarded to our staff.

It is true that the street side may be a bit noisy in this location.

The opening hours of our restaurants will be reconsidered after summer - your feedback is helpful.

Best regards

So do not stay here if you have long days in meetings and the need to sleep. The work started at 06:30 up until 23:30 and being court side the temporary shelter on the roofs to shelter the work from the rain, you find that all smells are withheld including cigarette odours from the builders which either stops you from opening your window or makes your room stink like a 90's brewery!
Won't be staying here anytime soon. Lack of sleep, poor ventilation court side, elevator noise I heard from room (401) and the room service being closed on a monday(!) plus a miniature bathroom. When you're sat on the loo you can wash your hair in the sink! That's how cramped the bathroom was...

Shame as it looked nice on the website albeit a bit spooky.

Room Tip: Ask specifically for a room far from elevator shaft!

Reading some reports about the Hotel Seurahuone on the trip across to Helsinki, I almost cancelled the reservation. But on arrival I found that both the positive and negative reviews had some accuracy but needed to be taken in context. This is the oldest hotel in Helsinki, so that means certain things. The foyer is small and the counter is quaint but by and large the service is fine. Heaps of tour group luggage in the desk area may not be all that attractive but it is safe and efficient. The elevator is ancient, but it is a treat and for its age is reasonably quick. Just remember, don't stand there waiting for a self opening elevator door - there isn't one. I took an interior room. This means, with the charming arched floor plan that my rooom loses a bit of space in the interior bevel. And even though I had day time construction noise, by night it is really quiet. There is no air conditioning as others have listed, so opening the room for air during the day means more noise, But when the windows are closed they effectively double glaze against the noise. The room decor is a nice mixture of original theme and modern texture and lighting, all in all very pleasant. The breakfast is not a la carte, but what choice is there isn't too bad even by Australian expectations. I am not the greatest continental breakfast fan but additional choices of scrambled egg, bacon and sausage gave me a reasonable meal. i just wish the coffee was real. However it is a fifty metre stroll to outside venues if you, as I was, are hanging out for a real espresso. The hotel opens onto one of the busiest in CBD Helsinki, and there is no gym. These are the two downsides I noticed most.

Room Tip: Take an interior room on a lower floor and take some exercise on the stairs.

I was curious about this famous hotel. It is really close to railway station, i would save time, just cross the street and you are on the train. The house itself is impressive, the stairs are beautiful, and the room hight is gorgeous. But the room I got, on the 4th floor, is not nice. The table looked like a dog had got nervous breakdown and scratched the desk. The bathroom was the most tiny one with too oversized sink. The inside of the bathtube was yellow (it is supposed to be white) from the ironed water. Breakfast was dissappointment. One plus was the friendly personel. But the standard is like at a 2 star hotel, or a youth hostel. One other positive thing was that the room facing the courtyard was quiet, so i got nice sleep anyway. But I wont come back. This is not value for the money, even if I found 40% off on the net, this is still not value for money. If they don´t upgrade the whole interior of this old building.

Room Tip: 4th floor nonsmoking facing courtyard gives good sleep

We appreciated the spacious room with wooden floor even if the interior is all in all somewhat worn out. A big plus is also the location: it could hardly get more central. The service was friendly. Breakfast was ok but nothing special.
