“haute cuisine in relaxed atmosphere”
Reviewed May 16, 2013

The restaurant looks quite modest but food and service are outstanding. We had the menu of day and wine recommendations. The pike perch with truffle sause was hedonistic stuff. Great food and wine pairing with attentive service. Excellent.

“Highly recommended for food and atmosphere”
Reviewed April 18, 2013

Love the atmosphere which is laid back but still very FINE dining type. The staff all seem to be doing exactly what they love and thus really give you an experience instead of just food. The place is small and intimate; but still it does not get too loud. The food is really excellent; we all went with the daily set; with some minor changes to some of the dishes for some in our party. All changes were well accommodated and suggested. The only minor disappointment was the cheese plate; however, I'm personally not a cheese person anyway. Otherwise the tastes and textures and combinations of the foods were truly magnificient and the enthusiasm of the staff is just admirable. Do book WELL in advance and don't expect fast food; but a relaxing and laid back, easy evening out. Excellent language skills all around!

“VERY fine eating!”
Reviewed March 28, 2013

Muru looks like a bistro, wooden floors, small bar, wine 'cellar' up in the rafters. It's a cosy, understated environment where you immediately have this feeling that you will eat well. True, but you will in fact eat very well indeed and enjoy cooking, wines and service which all excel. The staff all obviously love what they are doing. The kitchen is tiny and the set menu is according to what's at its best; there are also a few regular daily dishes such as a risotto or a terrine.

We opted for the daily set menu; rather than order a bottle of wine, we wanted to try different ones to go with the various courses and this was happily accommodated. A delicious glass of house champagne to start was carefully sourced from a Récoltant-Manipulant, a grower making his/her own wine. We ate Jerusalem artichoke soup with a smoked whitefish mousse and salmon caviar; a beautifully creamy juicy guinea fowl breast with black truffle; cheeses with cherry jam; a Pavlova with mango and sea-buckthorn ice-cream. Amongst the wines we enjoyed were a spätburgunder from Baden and a meaty pinot noir from New Zealand, the same grape but different weights.

The was a contented purr about the place, full of happy diners, not noisy; a family with three pre-teen children were likewise quietly and contentedly concentrating on their dinners and enjoyment.

The staff were all delightful. Our sommelier, Samuil, looked after us with great charm and attention all evening, carefully explaining the menu and producing interesting, perfectly complementary wines. We bought the Muru cookbook to take away. We can't understand a word of it, but the mere possession of it (and the photographs) are a happy souvenir of a memorable dining experience.

Note: You must book, choosing the earlier or later sitting. The staff will talk to you in perfect English on the telephone!

“Local foodies' favorite in Helsinki”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

If you are successful, the reservation of the table can be arranged within two months. Ours was reserved in November. It made be wonder whether anything is that good. Well, it was. Cozy atmosphere, knowledgeable service and excellent meals. There were four of us, all well aware what is good food, and came out happy. Lovely!

“A gem for foodies”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

Assuming that you have managed to get a reservation, yes it is that popular, don't assume that this is going to be a fancy, white table cloths type of place, on the other hand don't be fooled by the relaxed and rustic environment. The food, wine and service will be 5 star.

We managed to visit twice in our week long visit to Helsinki, and it was consistently good on both visits. You are quickly welcomed by the staff, who are keen for you to relax and enjoy the experience. On our first visit we opted for the menu of the day, with the matched wines. We started with a lovely glass of 'winter' champagne from a small producer while some bread and amazing home-made tapanade arrived. We then enjoyed some of the best Finnish cooking as the dishes kept coming. Each had a well balanced flavour profile, highlighting the quality of the ingredients and with varying textures. Perfect.

One of the nicest things was that the wines changed with each course, rather than compromising with a wine to cover two. I opted for the half glass with each course, which was perfect. We had the joy of being served by Nikolas and Kati who were extremely knowledgeable about the wines and dishes that they were serving which really brought the experience to life. It felt very personable.

On our second visit we chose from the menu board. With Bouillabaisse, Beets & Goats Cheese, a round each of seafood risotto, then Reindeer tournards with gnocchi, cabbage and truffle, Cheese to share, a chocolate valhrona cake and some blueberry and almond cake. In total we had 8 different wines, each were PERFECTLY matched to the dishes. One of the best wine matching experiences we have had.

The restaurant has won awards from their peer group, once you visit, you will see why.
