A lovely, cosmopolitan city to visit. Helsinki is famous for its coffee culture, and we certainly appreciated it after a week on a ship. It was spring and strolling down Aleksanterinkatu to Senate Square at lunch time it was great to see so many locals taking their lunch breaks on the grass and benches under trees enjoying the fresh and and bright sunshine. It was a relaxed scene that fitted with the feel of the city as we walked around, visited the imposing Lutheran Cathedral, the market in Hakaniemi Square, the spectacular Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, Finlandia Hall, and shopped in Mannerheimintie. We didn't really have any pre-conceived view of Helsinki and found the city and its friendly people delighted us at every turn.

This building is an amazing sight from outside and a must see when in helsinki. there are a crazy number of tour buses and tourists in the square in front which oddly stay in the square and dont even venture up the stairs letalone go inside. inside its fairly plane but a refreshing escape from the tourists and still architecturally beautiful through its simplicity.

It's a nice area of the city, but beware of Tourists! and of course pick pockets, especially in July and August. Not too much to do, but have a look for a while

As part of an excursion from our cruise, we visited the Lutheran Cathedral, formerly known as Saint Nicholas's Church. The name change occurred in 1917 when Finland gained its independence from Russia. The church was built between about 1830 to 1850 as a tribute to the Grand Duke of Finland, Nicholas I of Russia. It has a tall green dome surrounded by 4 smaller domes. Definitely worth a stop and the walk up the steps!
