“Another pretty UNESCO site”
Reviewed October 23, 2010

We had an extra day in Helsinki and the Fortress of Suomenlinna turned out to fit in very nicely. We did not join any guided tour, just taking a slow walk on the islands against some very cold winds in an early, sunny October afternoon. This site certainly lives up-to the UNESCO World Heritage prestige and I would not hesitate to recommend it. The only piece of advise is that if you plan on visiting in the winter (off-peak) season, please check the ferry schedule becoz the ferries do not come very frequent.

“Very nice island, close to Helsinki”
Reviewed October 20, 2010

Suomenlinna it's 15 minutes away. The trip costs you 4 euro (return trip) but the island worths more :)))
Is very nice, very quiet, and you see a part of the Finland History: cannons, medieval walls, Kings Gate, Vesikko Submarine (unfortunately open only until 31 august) etc.

If you go to Helsinki you should take a half day trip to Suomenlinna!

“List of World Heritage Sites of the UNESCO”
Reviewed October 11, 2010

The sea fortress of Suomenlinna is the object protected by UNESCO. Her history begins about 250 years ago. The Swedish name of a fortress – Sveaborg. Fortress strengthenings are constructed on 7 rocky islands making «Wolf Skerry». Five of them are connected among themselves by bridges or plaits. In territory Suomenlinna (Sveaborg) there are many well remained forts and bastions. It is interesting to visit a military museum the Arena.
Input in a fortress the free. You have to pay money if you want to enter museums. It was very interesting for me to visit Sveaborg, because near the St.-Petersburg (Russia) the Kronshtadt fortress is situated.
I know a lot about history and time and I visited the Kotlin Island not once and I was on some northern forts of the Kronshtadt fortress (a fort Obruchev, a fort of Totleben). In whole I want to mention that it is a good pedestrian excursion in good summer or autumn weather.

“Bring your walking shoes”
Reviewed September 29, 2010

Going out to Suomenlinna was easy. You get the boat at the docks, where you can buy tickets out of machines if you don't have a card already. Takes about 20 mins to get out there. I went off season so many of the museums weren't open but even without going into them there was plenty to look at. The views over the water were beautiful and the buildings themselves will have you snapping pics for some time. The fortress is cobbled so you will need good shoes and it can get quite steep in places and there a few drops so you would have to keep a close eye on children and any adventurous adults.

I was fortunate to have a good day but it can get quite cold out there so bring an extra layer. There are plenty of picnic tables there so you can bring your own supplies if you don't feel like paying for a meal out there (and you need a good few hours just to get around the place so you will get hungry). If you have no plans to eat out there make sure to bring along a bottle of water. With all the walking you'll get dehydrated easily and off season, the open cafes are not easy to find.

“A few hours in Helsinki? Head off to Suomenlinna and take the guided tour.”
Reviewed August 25, 2010

Just came back from a Baltic cruise and visited the lovely city of Helsinki. The city proper has many interesting sights, but the Fortress of Suomenlinna was certainly the highlight. The daily guided tour was very informative and interesting and our guide, Henrik, was very charming and affable. While discovering the history of the fort, you also can experience the beauty of the surroundings. We were fortunate to arrive during some summer weather and the islands were spectacular. Highly recommended:
