“Pretty good in the winter too!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2014

My two children and I were in Helsinki in February, this was one of the “must do” attractions on our list. We spent several hours on the island.

The 15 minute ferry trip from Helsinki Market to Suomenlinna is itself pretty impressive in the winter, the harbour was mostly frozen with ferries leaving trails of crushed ice as they ploughed their way through. It was fun to stay outdoors on deck to feel see and hear the ship breaking through the ice. Some really nice views.

The Suomenlinna tourist map helpfully shows the many attractions that are CLOSED during the winter but that still leaves a lot to see in the winter time.

We are from the south of England which does not get that much snow, so even the snow on the island and the frozen sea beaches were attractions enough for us! Everything else was a bonus. We spent a good few hours walking round, exploring the sights, walking on the frozen sea. The southern part of the islands hosts the big guns, as well as a pretty strong biting wind when we were there. As other reviewers have commented, in the winter, in minus whatever temperatures, dress appropriately and you'll be fine.

We enjoyed hot drinks in the small Cafe Vanilla, and smiled at one of the signs in there “No, we don't have Wi-Fi. TALK to each other :-)”

Please feel free to ask questions.

“Nice boat trip, lots of history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 20, 2014 via mobile

It takes only 15 mins to get to the island by boat from Helsinki. We followed the blue route, which took us all the way to the King's gate at the end of the main Island. You can easily spend 2 hours here or more if you visit some of the museums.

“Outstanding boat trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014 via mobile

We went to Suomenlinna in winter and the ferry trip was included on a three public transport ticket which we purchased from the tourist info centre in Helsinki. The view as the boat went through the ice was very pretty. We loved the island and enjoyed walking round it and hearing the audio commentary to the film in the museum, as we didn't know much about the island beforehand. Had a very nice home-cooked lunch in Cafe Vanille (very cute old Russian-style wooden building) and a cup of afternoon tea in the Ice Cellar cafe and gallery where I also bought some nice cards. A great day out and would be lovely to go in summer when you could take a picnic.

“escape from the city buildings of Helsinki”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2014

beautiful weather and a short boat ride from Helsinki downtown, it seems like we were transported to the countryside. I love the tranquility of this petit island with old historic forts overlooking the sea.
