My two children and I were in Helsinki in February, this was one of the “must do” attractions on our list. We spent several hours on the island.
The 15 minute ferry trip from Helsinki Market to Suomenlinna is itself pretty impressive in the winter, the harbour was mostly frozen with ferries leaving trails of crushed ice as they ploughed their way through. It was fun to stay outdoors on deck to feel see and hear the ship breaking through the ice. Some really nice views.
The Suomenlinna tourist map helpfully shows the many attractions that are CLOSED during the winter but that still leaves a lot to see in the winter time.
We are from the south of England which does not get that much snow, so even the snow on the island and the frozen sea beaches were attractions enough for us! Everything else was a bonus. We spent a good few hours walking round, exploring the sights, walking on the frozen sea. The southern part of the islands hosts the big guns, as well as a pretty strong biting wind when we were there. As other reviewers have commented, in the winter, in minus whatever temperatures, dress appropriately and you'll be fine.
We enjoyed hot drinks in the small Cafe Vanilla, and smiled at one of the signs in there “No, we don't have Wi-Fi. TALK to each other :-)”
