“Worth a few hours of your day”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

I visited here on a gorgeous day in Helsinki. It was very windy once on the island and it was chilly even with the sun out. I wished I would've had a jacket with me. There are a few cafes on the island so you don't need to bring food although it seems that some people go for a picnic. I didn't bother going to any of the museums and just walked around and saw as much as I could. I think I spend 2-2.5 hours on the island.

“A beautiful and historically significant place.”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Particularly interesting is the church steeple that is also a lighthouse. I visited on a lovely summer Sunday, and the island was full of local people enjoying the sun and atmosphere, with picnics and children playing everywhere.

“an Island out at sea”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

You go there by a ferry from the market place. A guided tour is a good choice if you have time for it. At the Fortress of Suomenlinna you have all; history, restaurants, museums, the sea, the sun, the opportunity to swim and walk, have a pic nic,. It has something for everyone old and young.

“A gem in Helsinki”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

The problem with tourist attractions is that there are 1. too many tourists and 2. the place is just a marketplace where the actual object is totally lost under the souvenir stalls (say, Mont St Michel). Suomenlinna is the opposite, uncommercial, large enough to absorb a number of tourists without difficulty. It is an island fortress with fortifications, houses, monuments and nice views over the city or towards the sea. It has not experienced bombings and has been recently restored with care. It is very good with children (take swimgear with you, although the water is mostly on the cool side) with all kinds of tunnels and exciting buildings. It is of course at its best in the summer, but in the winter there is also lots to see and it is totally different then. Worth a half-day trip, at least. The boat trip is an additional bonus.

“Beautiful island with interesting historical places”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Spend an exciting day at Suomenlinna, explore the King's Gate and the dark "caves" - the tunnels, where you need a torch in order to see where you're going - kids love it!
Check out the cool submarine "Vesikko" and also the small toy museum...
Loads to see and do, it will easily take a whole day. There are also lovely restaurants and cafes around the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress so you won't go hungry!
