As a Norwegian, I am torn between rooting for the Swedes and thinking "this all led to Finlands freedom". Anyhow, this is a fantastic piece of Nordic history. Yes, there traces of Russian occupation is everywhere, and yes, FInland getting on Russian hands meant Norway was "transferred" from Danish to Swedish rule. But all that is history, and it is all here.

A great day out, rain not withstanding. A lot to see and do. Check out the great brewery restaurant (great beer and a huge Ceasar Salad), then all the history your heart desires in a wonderful setting.

This has been described as the "gibralter" of the North. We visited it to watch the Tall ships going out to sea from Helsinki to Riga, which was a one-off event but any day there would be something to watch from the beach or the cliffs, The suomenlinna museum is worth a visit, we didn't have time to see the Customs museum or Toy museum. We got to and from the island using the ferry which is free with a helsinki travel card, there is also an alternative private water bus which is also cheap. The walk from the north of the fortress area to the south is a pleasant walk, with interesting fortifications, a huge historic dry dock, a nice park and good sea views . There are various good eating places on the island so you can spend a day here

We happened to visit on the last day of a sailboat event, so the ferry had quite an unusually long line to get from Market Square to the island. However, it was worth the wait to catch the sight of the boats off the coast of the island in their magnificent parade on the sea!

Soumenlinna is very large, so plan for several hours to walk around and take in the sights. There are some museums and fortress ruins to visit, but this island is mostly about strolling around and seeing the environment, enjoying the ambience.

On a nice day, there is a small swimming beach which many people use to enjoy the water, which seems very clear (despite being an active harbor!). There are also many rocks near the water for children to explore, so bring a change of clothing if they end up wet.

The island has some cafe, ice cream, and restaurant facilities, or bring a picnic to enjoy.

Locals do live on the island, so be respectful when near to their homes.

Enjoy!!

We decided to go here because we were passing by and the ferry was about to leave. It was surreal, the surroundings were beautiful, the town was sleepwalking, and there was no one. Would recommend.
