“nice place around Helsinki”
Reviewed February 15, 2013

Located in small island near Helsinki. You need to take ferry to reach the island.
Departing point is from Kauppatorii (harbour) in front of Helsinki Presidential Palace.
I recommend full day visit since the island is quite big to stroll and a lot place to see.
Just follow the sign and you wouldn't get lost.
There is also information center in the center of the island where you can get a lot of information about the fortress.

“lovely day out”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

very interesting and beautiful. Lovely to walk around the edge of the fortress and along its defenses and gun ports. Shame about the prices of admission to museums and restaurants.

“The Winter Trip is well worth it”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

The ferry is still just 15minutes, even in a frozen sea and ploughing through the ice is a quietly exhilarating experience.
The views of the surrounding islands from the boat are stunning and the fortress isalnd itself was great, even though it was covered up in snow. A very different experience from the summer I am sure! Wasn't much to see and do in Winter but that didn't really matter. The locals are friendly and happy to chat and pass the time of day. Make sure you know the ferry times in winter so you don't have to kill time in the freezing cold, but the hot chocolate in the nearby café is very welcome.

“Favourite place in Helsinki”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

This is a must-see; especially in the summer. It's historically fascinating but is also an excellent day out. Take the public transport ferry or the private ferry to the island and make a day of it. Take a picnic or eat at the cafe or pizzeria on the island. There's a tiny beach on the island (with showers) and you can sunbathe on the rocks too. Great place to go to with kids.

“not in winter, though.”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

Wonderful in the summer, but in the winter the water freezes over, creating a fascinating and stark contrast to the summer.
