Start your trip with a ferry ride from the Market Square. For a short 11mins, you get a feel of sea breeze that is just refreshing. As you start walking in Suomenlinna, try not to "follow the flow". Go your own way and you will discover so much more.
Make sure you have good walking shoes when you visit Suomenlinna. Be considerate when you see signs to respect the privacy of residents. Be aware also that a island prison exists in Suomenlinna. Beware of your bounderies. If you see guards walking around, it's not only for general security, but also for that added facility in the island.
Prices of food and drinks are generally outrageously expensive. If you don't mind bringing a picnic basket along, you will do so much better on your trip. There is this little cafe near the submarine that almost looks like a tree house. It's quaint and has a homey feeling. You may want to check it out.
If you are interested to see ships passing by the island on a closer view... up close and personal, the amfitheater looking structure at the edge of the island is the best place to be around 1710 to 1745. See Viking Line's and Silja Line's ships heading towards Sweden. On a peak summer season, see some bigger luxury ships too. They may not pass the exact path as that of Viking and Silja, but close enough.
For the walking freak and the admirer of the seas... Suomenlinna is worth the visit.
