I love the hustle and bustle of markets and this was right near the harbour which gave it another dimension. I enjoyed seeing the boats from which traders were selling their wares though there were only 2 and I was expecting more. There were stalls selling fruit and veg, cooked food, souvenirs, etc. In general things were pretty pricey so we didn't actually get anything except for Omena Possu which was freshly baked - nice, warm, apple-ly and sugary. I went back to try to find the stall before we left Helsinki, but it wasn't there : ( There is easy access to harbour boat trips too, if you're so inclined. I laughed at the comments on here about the seagulls - hilarious! We definitely saw the ice cream of a lady being attacked, so yes, be warned!!! There were also swamps of seagulls crowding around this guy who was trying to eat - poor guy! A place you will invariably end up in when in Helsinki and it's really nice to spend some time there! We were there practically every day we were in Helsinki!

We visited Market Square twice on our visit to Helsinki, since it's conveniently located near the ferries, cathedral, and Esplanadi. The market is predominantly for fruit/vegetables and souvenirs. Perhaps not to everyone's tastes, but we thought that the vendors had a great variety of sourvenirs, some of which were handmade and wonderful, including jewelry, Finnish hats (we tried on some hand-knitted ones), reindeer antler crafts (including earrings!), watercolor paintings, etc. There were also kitschy items such as t-shirts, magnets, bottle openers, etc.

Our verdict is that this square is fun and should have something for everyone. On a Saturday, it's crowded but still manageable. The vendors come every day, but set up in different spots, so be forewarned if you return looking to buy something you saw the prior day.

The market area by the quayside is worth a visit if you are in Helsinki. There are plenty of stalls selling fresh vegetables and fruit, bric-a-brac, local self serve delicacies,Finnish clothing and souvenirs. Strawberries were sold by litre jugs!
We had just bought 2 ice creams and were walking away when the vendor shouted "watch the seagulls!" - they dive down for the ice creams and we ended up in a ferry booking office to eat them. The market area was the first time we had ever seen an official with a tabard with "seagull scarer" in English on the back and waving a red flag. Do Finnish seagulls understand English?

We enjoyed the cherries we bought here, as well as the meat pies for 3.5 euro each. The market itself is average.

It's a little market that sells some finnish handcraft souvenirs, finnish food, fruits and clothes. It's on the way from senaatintori to kaivopuisto and esplanadi.
