We've taken this trip many times to Tallinn from Helsinki. We usually wait until there's some kind of voucher or offer doing the rounds here in the newspaper and then you can go for as cheaply as 14€ each. The boa we take leaves Helsinki harbour at 11:00, the trip takes just over two hours and then the boat leaves Tallinn to return at 18:00 giving you a few hours to look around the city, go and eat etc. The boat has a massive buffet which we've eaten pretty much every time. Sometimes the food's been amazing and other times just so so. If you want to have the buffet I'd recommend booking it in advance because the places sell out quickly and if you try to pay onboard you'll be disappointed. Wine and beer is included in the buffet and I've noticed a lot of people use this to it's full advantage and spend the entire journey in the restaurant getting steadily wasted on free alcohol. My only complaint in the past has been the lack of seating on the boat. There is a big bar area and of course the upper deck but especially during summer months the boat is filled to capacity and it's hard to find anywhere to sit down. The boats are always on time so don't be late...they won't wait for you!! I would recommend the day trip for people on holiday in Helsinki who want to see another country too. Old Tallinn is really beautiful and the main attractions can all be seen in the five or so hours you have on the day cruise from Helsinki.

We took the trip from Stockholm to Helsinki as many times before. This time we wanted to try the buffet - but I was a great disappointment. We had the buffet at 19:00 and you could easily taste that a lot of the food had been heated before and it was also not very warm. I don't think that we ever will try it again.

Went from Helsinki to Tallinn, Estonia, and back again. Very smooth ride and no complaints. You do have to jockey for a seat unless you sit in the restaurants, but we usually didn't have a problem getting one several times. Great value. Be forewarned....the ships leave on time and will wait for no one. Please to spend more time than you think in Tallinn as it's a cool place to eat, sightsee, and just walk around.

The Helsinki-Tallinn & back trip took about 2.5 hours each way. The food in restaurants/cafés on board the Viking line is good.

We used Viking Line to get from Tallinn to Helsinki and back. On the way to Helsinki the cruise was very crowded and we were not able to sit. There was some space outside to sit, but it was rainy and cold, so that was not an option. So we sat the entire cruise on the ground.

On the way back to Tallinn we managed to sit on chairs inside, which was much better.

Also some people are clearly drinking a lot on the cruise and are getting very annoying. That, together with the great amount of people that need to get on and off the cruise who are all doing their best to be the first, doesn't really make it a nice experience. It just feels like you are doing some very cheap cruise.

So I can't recommend it. I'd rather pay more and get a plane, which is much faster as well (even with checking in and everything), because the cruiseship is only doing about 38 km/h. But I'm sure it's nice for people from Helsinki who can buy cheap alcohol from Tallinn.
