“Hotel Haven? What about Hotel Heaven!”
Reviewed August 19, 2010

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to HEL. I believe there are only 5 5-star hotel in the city: 3 Hiltons, Hotel Kamp and Hotel Haven. I haven't stayed at the other 4, but I would still highly recommend this hotel. But remember to book in advance since they have only 77 rooms, it gets filled up really quickly.

- Very modern decor (but most importantly, a very warm tone throughout the hotel's and room design, lots of light colors, wood, white etc..)
- Very comfortable beds
- Bathroom amenities all "Elemis" branded
- Large rooms (about 35-40 sqm) I believe
- Fabulous and intimate service at Front Desk
- Even turndown with water
- Very central location, right next to Market Square/Espanade and the ferries to other islands
- Free wi-fi
- Free breakfast buffet (continental though)
- TV in bathroom
- Tons of really good restaurants nearby, including Havis, which is the onsite restaurant

- Would prefer if free breakfast buffet had something hot
- Views were not great.. just facing the other buildings
- Gym was pretty tiny
- Service at the hotel restaurant (Havis) was a little slow

Highly recommended!

This is a very nice hotel. The outside is unassuming. Looks more like an office building than a hotel. Location is behind Market Square and the waterfront. Some rooms may face the water, but ours didn't. (I know that there is going to be construction nearby, possibly in front of it, so you may want to ask.) There is a very handy walkway from the market square , next to Sundman's restaruant that takes you right into the lobby. Parking is limited and I must warn you about that if you are going to have a car. The bellman is not allowed to drive your car, so you must park it yourself. They draw you a little map, which sends you around the block and into a little courtyard where you take a James Bond style car elevator into the tiny garage. Our car was small and fit fine, but we wouldn't have wanted to try it with a large vehicle. From there, you take an elevator right up to the lobby. Quite an experience. Once parked, everything was lovely. Beautiful, quiet rooms with large well equipped baths. Very comfortable king sized beds with duvets. The receptionist doubles as a concierge and his restaurant recommendations were terrific. They do encourage you to try the hotel's restaurant, which we only used for breakfast. If we return to Helsinki, this will be our choice of hotel.

great location (smack in the corner of market square and the esplanade),
great hotel, but not a boutique (as advertised to us)
stayed 3 nights. in-room breakfast and downstairs are great.
overall the staff excelled at their job, except one, she was probably getting trained.
The (sponsored?) B&O gadgets are good but don't really make up the price.
Some good humour with their stationary and amenities. Fell a little short on the quality of the bathroom. And we have to pay extra for parking?!? (32EUR).

Since I booked and confirmed a chosen room 3 months ahead, I expected to get exactly that, with them guaranteeing it. but on the day they gave me one which was just too low and covered from the downstairs roofing, cropping some of the views into the harbour. shame

so immaculate, so perfect, so expensive!
it felt like a (small) 5 star hotel. but not boutique, not their yet with the "home away from home" feel.

still one of helsinki's finest to my opinion.
if you don't have to watch the wallet, go for it!

This hotel is beautiful, and is extremely close to lots of the sites in Helsinki. It's like 2 blocks from Senate Square, 1/2 a block from the Kuappatori & indoor market (where ferries to Suomenlinna also leave), and ~10 minute walk to several ferry terminals to Tallinn (we used Linda Line but Nordic departs there too, I think) and the central rail station/City Center. So while there wasn't much to see in Helsinki, the hotel's awesome location made it super convenient to hit most of them.

We had signed up before our trip with the Small Luxury Hotel of the World group so got a free upgrade to a luxe room and late check-out @ 2 pm, which made it easier on our last day here. Thanks to the reviewers on this site for that tip! The luxe room was beautiful, we were in room 705 with a great view of the Uspensky Cathedral, waterfront and outdoor market. The bed was super comfortable, and there was a nice sofa in front of the tv.

The hotel gave us 2 free bottles of water and a welcome box of chocolates. The staff were really helpful and friendly; I had asked the front desk about the Sparakoff tram and they called me to tell me that they had looked it up, and it was closed for the weekend. Saved us a lot of frustration!

So the only complaint was the small selection at breakfast and the fact that it gets super crowded late in the morning, but we went in a bit earlier the next day and it was fine. I think we were spoiled with the huge selection at our hotel in Tallinn, though, so this spread seemed a bit light. But all in all, a great hotel

Before making your booking, register on Small Luxury Hotel of the world slh.com so you can be upgraded.
You should book early so you will pay 169 euros the room. Rooms 707 (luxury) and 709 (smaller) have a great view over the Helsinki port.
You do not need a car if you stay in Helsinki for the week-end.
In the hotel, the restaurant Havis (fish) is very fine and closes at 10PM.The wine is very expensive.
Near the hotel, the restaurant Grotesk is open on saturday evening, is fine but you need to book.
The hotel is centrally located on the port near the Esplanade and near the Tourist Office (50 meters).
Buy an Helsinki card at the Tourist office and your city tour by bus is a gift...You can ask the hotel to prebook for you the city tour or book it on the web site Helsinki Expert helsinkiexpert.com or at the Tourist Office.
The cruises Sunlines are waiting you for a 90 minutes cruise. They are situated just in front of the hotel. There was a lot of wind but the boat do not move and you do not have sea sick at all !
We also visited the design museo:very interesting.
We stayed 2 days for the week-end and it was really marvellous. The hotel staff is perfect. The rooms, with fine free Wifi, were clean and beautiful.
Breakfast is not great but good.
Have a pleasant stay.

Very helpful staff, clean and spacious room and bathroom, classy lobby and chic breakfast area but poor breakfast for sure. It was comfortable staying at Haven.

Our stay at the hotel Haven was otherwise quite nice - room was very nice and clean, lobby and bar areas cozy and stylish, service considerate yet a little reserved as so many times in Finland. We were quite satisfied with our stay until we went for the breakfast in the morning. We were quite astonished by the limited selection of things you're used to find even in much less pricey hotels in Scandinavia - and here we are sitting in one, that claims to be "a gourmet’s treat" in their web site and brochures. The worst part of it was, that they actually charge extra for eggs and other warm stuff. They say it's because they want to guarantee they are fresh for each client. That's nice. But in other hotels of this standard they do the same, with no extra cost - breakfast IS normally included in the room price in Finland and other nordic countries unlike in for example U.S.

But the worst happend after we'd been there for a while. Another customer dropped a whole cup of coffee on the floor, but no-one ever came to clean it up! The personnel walked right through the puddle of coffee, but never did anything about it. We had to walk right through it as well when filling our plates, but they did not pay any attention. When we politely asked wheter they were going to, they just said something about having to possibly mop it away.

When I wanted to give feedback, the hotel manager seemed to take my complains seriously (after I first got an e-mail address from the reception that went to whole another company), but when the restaurant manager later called me he did not sound like taking our feedback seriously at all. Which means, the breakfast is pretty sure going to be the same in the future. Make no mistake - all the incredients were of perfect quality. It was just really really modest with for example tiny rolls and croissants, a cup of 1/2 strawberry, two blueberries, two rasberries and 4 red currants, standard yoghurt, very modest selection of cereals etc. A disappointment for us, who do value a nice breakfast.
