“Beautiful hostel, special location”
Reviewed January 27, 2011

Hostel Suomenlinna, like the island itself is incredibly quiet in winter. However it has a lot of natural beauty and a good nightlife to recommend itself.

The heritage listed hostel building offers spacious, comfortable and well lit rooms with very clean shared bathrooms. There is a decent kitchen and eating/social space where you can meet other guests. It only looked like it had around 10 rooms, so I imagine in peak period during summer it would have a vibrant energy to it.

At 54 euros per night for a twin room the hostel is more expensive than those on the mainland. The five euro breakfast was a satisfying collection of cold cuts and rye bread. Most of all you are paying for the experience of staying on the island with the 900 other local residents. It is a great experience to spend a few days pottering around the UNESCO sight without the hassle of catching in the ferry everyday. Behind the hostel is a bar, Klubi20 which has long opening hours and seems to be the haunt for island locals, who are very welcoming to tourists who stumble in.

Overall staying at this hostel, the only accommodation offered on the island, is a fantastic way to see another side of Helsinki.

I booked this hostel based on recommendations by friends. Honestly I've been the better. The price for a private room was 50 euros and breakfast was NOT included. Also, you have to take a ferry to and from the island to get out to Helsinki and the ferry only runs once or twice and hour! Not very convenient.

In addition, all the people I saw at the hostel were mid-aged or older. It definitely caters to that crowd. There is no central "hangout" location, the internet was down while I was there, several staff members do NOT speak English, and there is no information desk or person around to answer questions.

However, if you want a quiet and clean hostel, this would definitely fit the bill.

I left it til the last minute to book hostel accomodation in Helsinki and as it was the May bank holiday weekend, the only available hostel was on Suomelinna, which is an island about 15 minutes boat ride from Helsinki centre. I was slightly apprehensive about this as I thought I would be quite isolated and it would be difficult to get to and from the mainland.

However, this turned out not to be a problem. Boats go really regularly from the Market Square in Helsinki and you can buy a day ticket (which can be used on other forms of transport) for 6 euros. The boats start at 6 am and finish at 2 am, so you can get back after a night out.

The island is an idyllic setting. We had great weather and the island was beautiful (not so sure what it would be like in winter, however). There is a Siwa Supermarket right beside the hostel and it's great for buying picnic supplies etc. Within 10 minutes walk of the hostel you are on beautiful coastline, with views of Helsinki and cafes/shops nearby. It really is perfect for relaxing with a beer or some picnic snacks before heading into Helsinki proper.

The hostel itself is quite basic. The staff are friendly and it's very clean. There is a kitchen that can be used for visitors and also free internet. The only down point is that the hostel is extremely quiet and not very sociable. There was not much chat amongst the various travellers and there seemed to be an "early to bed and early to rise" ethos amongst most people. If I was returning to Helsinki I would probably try to get a hostel in the centre that was a bit more lively but this hostel would be ideal for families or older travellers who are there simply to relax.
