“Average Hostel, Wonderful Location”
Reviewed June 25, 2013

Hostel itself is just an average type but you will definitely love the location of this hostel. It is in Suomenlinna Island, a historic island in Helsinki. Clean and sound environment, so nice views around.

Clearly everything around this hostel is quite amazing! You have a full island with great landscape, great buildings, a submarine on land, the sea and Helsinki on the horizon. If you want a quiet place with historic background, Suomenlinna Islands is the perfect choice. As for the hostel, is not waht you would expect from such a great place. The hostel is both a travellers resting point, but also a young kids vacations camp, which can be a bit boring, having kids being kids (nothing against it, of course!), when you want to rest. It's a good place if you want to just stop and go, but with poor added value other than the island where it is located. Nevertheless, is the only hostel on the island, so is the only choice if you're on a budget.

This hostel is located on an island in front of Helsinki. The ferry takes about 17min to get there and runs 24hrs a day. The hostel is a renovated historic building in a former fortress. Therefore the walls are thick and the windows just medium sized. You have a good equiped kitchen in the upper floor and a common room with free internet access / wlan in the lower floor. The rooms are basic equipped but in a good condition. The showers are very clean, the stuff takes this serious. The breakefast is not included but worth trying it! There is a store nearby that is open until 10pm.

At night all the tourist has left the island and only the inhabitants stay. therefore you can see this special place in a very different light. This is the special magic about the hostel. Try it and you will love it!

We stayed here our first night in Helsinki. I wanted to start exploring Helsinki with the fortress and island. What bettter way to do it than to stay on the island? Which we did, even though we arrived late afternoon. But with all that daylight mid-July night time is far, far away. The Suomenlinna Hostel is quite close to the main ferry stop at so there was no trouble carrying our small amount of luggage. The ferry is part of the Helsinki transport system (HSL)
We did buy food from the Kauppatori market by the ferry dock in Helsinki but there is a store on the island that has everything. We had a great pizza and wine at Pizzeria Nikolai for dinner.
It was midsummer and a weekend. We arrived on the Friday. The island was packed with people who'd come over to picnic, relax and catch the last ferry back. So things were a tad noisy at night. Perhaps at this time of the year mid week would have been better.
The hostel was clean, comfortable and good value given how expensive Finland is.
As peple have said the hostel is quiet but the island is fabulous. It's definately a treat to stay here for a night or two if you want to kick back and enjoy the island.

This is the cleanest hostel I've ever stayed in and one of the most beautifully designed. It's an old school building and the dorms are mostly converted classrooms. They have paid attention to every detail with this place, everything looked good quality.

The hostel was fairly quiet whilst we were there, and I saw guests as young as 2 and old as 50. However I would say the majority of people staying looked to be in their twenties like us. I don't think this is a party hostel at all, but an historic island such as Suomenlinna wouldn't attract the kind of person who wants to go on a partying night out anyway. However, the ferries run to and from the island all day and very late at night so there would be nothing to stop you venturing into the city on a night out if you desired.

The shared dorm which we stayed in had really comfy bunk beds and each bed has a sidelight, so if you want to creep in late at night you can do so without disturbing the other guests. There are large lockers in the dorms which is handy and you pay a few euros for a deposit on a key. The dorms are well heated and generally spacious with big windows so you can see out (nice view).

The bathrooms were good and clean, and the showers had plenty of hot, high pressure water. The kitchen has a sink, 2 cooking hobs, microwave, good cooking equipment and utensils. There is a large dining/social space attached to the kitchen which we enjoyed spending time in. There's also a decent sized lounge with a TV and books, and a very large dining room which functions as a social room too (contains a PC + printer, information about the island/Helsinki).

I met 3 staff during my stay and they were all extremely helpful and spoke English fluently.

Suomenlinna island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with lots to discover whilst you're there. It's really a place for people who like a bit of culture and history (especially military history). It was very useful for us having a small supermarket (Siwa) opposite the hostel so that we could easily buy our food for the day without having to walk more then 30 seconds to take our shopping back! Also I found it very convenient that the ferry docks 1 minute's walk from the hostel's front door. Also worth mentioning is the bar that's across the road from the hostel. It was a surprisingly convenient place to stay.

The price of this hostel was high, but I thought this was fair and in line with the general costs of everything in Helsinki. It was an excellent experience for us.

Not much to write about the actual hostel itself. It's average in terms of room size and numbers - from memory 6 or 8 per room. There's only one light in the room also, so bring yourself a heard torch if you're wanting to move around at night. With that said, it's clean, the bathrooms are well maintained and breakfast is on offer each day for a couple of euros (and the breakfast is ok).

The location itself is magnificant. You will need to catch the Suomenlinna island ferry from the main wharfs in Helsinki, it takes approximately 15 minutes, and during Summer they run from early in the morning to just after midnight.

The island is picturesque, a wonderful place to walk around and find quiet areas for reflection if you need it.

BTW, there's a brewery located about 20 steps from the hostel, a MAJOR bonus if I do say so myself!
