“Outstanding!”

Excellent taste, excellent service, great great value! absolutely love it!

The Umeshu at Runeberginkatu serves best sushi outside Japan, at least my stay in Osaka, Tokyo and Kyoto.

“Good sushi but service needs improvement”
Reviewed December 12, 2013

The food is pretty good here, however the service is SLOW. Also the omakase menu is mostly unavailable, and also consists of too much food. Please take the cold, mealy sake off the menu, even if it is authentic, it is terrible!

“Excellent dishes in a relaxed atmosphere”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

This delightful Japanese restaurant has two locations a couple of hundred metres apart. We visited the Runeberginkatu location which is only open in the evenings. Both locations are very popular so booking is recommended, the staff speak perfect English. This is a great mix of Sushi bar and Izakaya (Japanese bistro)

We selected from many parts of the menu; the sashimi was fantastic, well cut excellent quality fish beautifully presented, the beef tataki cooked beautifully and presented with garlic, chilli and sauce, the edemame fresh and juicy. The star was the special of the day; yellowtail head, salt crusted, baked and served with a shiso sauce. The space is intimate and cosy, with a small number of tales. They do takeaway.

Although slightly out of the centre it is well worth a visit. Take the tram to Opera, then about 200m walk.

“Ambitious with food, relaxed with atmosphere”
Reviewed July 6, 2013

This is The Place that got me to like Japanese food. First with their ever so delicious sushi's, later with the rest of the Japanese kitchen I have always found not that tasty.

Here it is all different. They are rather ambitious with their food. Everything they bring to your table is astonishingly fresh. They have an unbelievable understanding of the most optimal temperatures of these fine, difficult dishes. The different structures of different ingredients are combined with great skill and together with their magical touch with spices they truly create fantastic food.

Despite this the atmosphere in this tiny restaurant is relaxed and no stress over proper dress-code is experienced. Some may feel the service is not in line with the quality of food here, this is not a place to be pampered in that sense. Still, they are friendly and professional with their responses to you.

As this place is really tiny and really popular, if you know you are going to stop by there do make a reservation. Due to their attitude towards the freshness and quality of their food, the preparations take time and in busy hours even getting something for take-away may take a couple of hours.

And those wondering whether this is a place for romance... Well, if your date appreciates most deluxe meals, this is definitely your place.

“Excellent quality Japanese food...”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

I have been a regular customer at Pohjoinen Hesperiankatu 15 where the restaurant has its first place but it is always rather crowded and when my wife and I visited them the other evening we were politely asked to visit their other place down the road at Runeberginkatu 59.
Both places are intimate, meaning small. The Runenerginkatu place is small with a few seats downstairs and a eight seats upstairs on a balcony. Both places have a take-away service but we decided to stay for the meal.
We had a 10 piece sashimi assortment with two Californian rolls and Maki Ebifura 8 piece assortment. The fish was fresh and good-looking, (like the author!) on a bed of crushed ice. The Maki was crunchy - delicious. The green tea and miso soup were tasty. An excellent meal.
We had excellent, polite and professional service and we were in and out in 45 minutes.
Cost-wise both restaurants are a bargain with high quality, fresh ingredients and good service.
