The best view was from the bridge. It good that the old ruin is a visitor attraction but there isn't much to see. Access is via a small footbridge.

This, the world's northernmost castle ruin, has an interesting history and is well worth a visit. It dates back to the early 17th century and is strategically situated on a small river island. Information boards give a good background to visitors.

The taxi driver recommended to visit the ruins when I was coming from the Kajaani Airport. So after the dinner I walked only 100m-200m from the town center to reach the site in the middle of the river. The ruins were interesting but rather small area. You can see the whole area from a bridge that goes above. The best part of this site is the awesome view over the ruins and river around it The parks next to river are also very nice and clean.

Kajaani Castle was originally built in the year 1604, commissioned by the Swedish king. It was the northernmost stone castle in the world. First the castle was used as a prison, then count Per Brahe further developed the castle as a living quarters fit for a nobleman in 1650s. Russian troops demolished the castle during The Great Northern War in 1716. A concrete road-bridge was built over the ruins in 1937.

Access is free. The castle island is just a short walk from the centre of Kajaani. The river-view is beautiful.

Roofless ruins of a 1600 century castle in the middle of Kajaani. Some renovation was going on, but visit was still possible.
