The castle ruins in Kajaani are unique and place to see in two very special ways:

1. It is the most northest stone fortress in the world
2. It is the only castle in Europe that has a bridge built over it

I truly hope that some day the bridge will be removed and the castle rebuilt as good drawings of this unique fortress have already been found.

The ruins are easy to find as they are in the middle of Kajaani city, in the midlle of the river, just 200 meters from the main shopping street. Easy to access and get near even with a wheelchair.

You can fish around the castle with a permit from the city.
Last spring there were lots of swans swimming and sleeping around the castle ruins.

Even it is quite small, it is a very special sight to see.

Castle ruins are under the bridge in the city center. Why the hell they have built a bridge trough a castle? The castle itself is always open and free to explore. This is really nice castle because it is small but quite a maze. At least kids have fun running around. River was dark and still, trees yellow and red. The views were really fantastic. After visiting castle you can wander through the river and relax.

Smallish ruins, but nice to visit on a summer evening. Seems to be a popular Place for the local youths.

This castle is very easily accessible from the city centre. In the summertime this would be a very nice picnic location. We visited in the winter and the stairs were very slippery and it felt a bit unsafe to walk around on the higher levels. There are history boards to tell the story about the castle in Finnish, English and Swedish.
