“Fantastic and magical place, bloody expensive though!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 2, 2012

I stayed here with my girlfriend and my twin girls from 1-3 rd december 2012.
We booked our flights separate and hotel and transfers which saved us at least £700 off the package deals! Finnair from manchester to Helsinki then a connection to rovaniemi. The hotel was very clean and the food was excellent! We stayed on and b and b offer which meant we paid for our evening meal which was a rip off! But its either pay there prices or pay a €50 return taxi fare to rovaniemi town centre!
You can walk it of course but if you have young children even with the warm clothes the cold bites within 5 minutes @minus 20.

Had a great day at the santa village and santa park were you are supposed to pay an entrance fee but we never got asked saving us €106 for a family of 4!

Overall 2 nights was enough great as a 1 off trip but make sure u pack some euros as a week in this place will require a re-mortgage of your home!

We stayed here for one night and enjoyed dinner and breakfast. Our rooms however (ground floor towards the parking spaces) looked rather tired. Especially the bathrooms should be looked after. Some dust on the furniture as well.

Pretty far from town center so if you arrive by train you won't be walking there. Once you are there though the place is nice enough with in room saunas and a good breakfast with friendly staff. Think ski resort. If you are there in the summer a ski resort seems a little sad. Next time I think I'd go city center.

Top lovation 20 min walk from city center, a roof deck to watch 360degrees view of the northern lights. The hotel is older and they were in the progress of renovating it. The restaurant is celebrating nordic foods on top level, don't miss it. Also great view from the restaurant.

My 8 year old son and I visited Lapland for 5 days in late December 2011 and stayed at the Forest Heights Hotel with first Choice. The hotel, the staff, the reps, the location, the surroundings were all excellent. We were so glad we stayed away from the town as being in the middle of the forest surrounded by snow covered trees made it feel so magical. I was a little nervous travelling as a single parent but I needn't have worried at all. The hotel staff and the First Choice reps could not do enough for us. They were so helpful and friendly and fantastic with children. Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean and really comfortable. The food in the hotel was good but drinks and snacks were a bit pricey. The hotel had sledges you could borrow and when we weren't out on trips, we spent loads of time outside on these, playing in the snow and building snowmen. There was a cinema in the hotel which showed a film every afternoon and they even provided endless amounts of free popcorn! Afterwards, they had a kids quiz and disco which was fun. I would highly recommend this hotel and Lapland to anyone, with children or without!

the sky hotel also known in the uk as forest heights which thomson sell as part of there lapland package was our choice for our magical christmas holiday in december 2011, firstly we stayed in the log cabins and not the main hotel biulding, the hotel itself was a little old fashioned but clean, with friendly staff, the cabins are however amazing!
we had a 4 bedroom cabin, fitted kitchen, dishwasher, all appliances, washing machine, tumble dryer, 2 bathrooms and even our own private sauna! we had an amazing sound system and huge flatscreen tv and dvd player, easily the best accomadation we have ever had.
it wasnt much more for the cabin and soo worth it , just a 5 min walk from the hotel but you feel like your out in the wilderness in the cabins. the hotel restaurant is very very expensive but it is a micheelin starred affair and apparently one of the top 5 restaurants in all of finland! we always caught a taxi bookable at reception and went into town, much cheaper and great selection to choose from.
this package from thomson was excellent , the reps worked soo hard during our stay as did the elves! i totally recommend this place for any family christmas break, ask reception for sledges, you can have many hours fun up in the forests here , and if your lucky like us you will see wild reindeer running through the forest, very quiet and peacefull but just mins from all the action, stunning .

We came to Rovaniemi purely to see Santa. We have 2 children, aged 5 + 7. On a friend's recommendation we stayed out of the city at Sky hotel. This is situated 3 km from the city on the top of a ski resort. There are both cabins and a hotel section with rooms. We stayed in a cabin and we were delighted. I had emailed and called the hotel several times whilst planning and spoke to Mira, the most helpful person you could ever imagine. She advised us to stay in 'large' family cabin and it was perfect for the 4 of us.

CABIN- the large cabin was half of a 'house' (see photo). it had a main bedroom downstairs, bathroom/laundry/sauna all in one area , lounge and kitchen. The (steep) upstairs had a double bedroom as well as a large landing area with a couch (?sofa bed) and a single bed. It could have accommodated another 2 children easily. It had a lovely feel with cable TV and basic food items like tea/coffee etc. It had a driveway but as we didn't have a car we had to walk to the hotel which was quite far along the roads or quick if you took a short cut uphill through the snow. That was fun for us but could be difficult if your mobility wasn't good.

HOTEL- The hotel is out of town with no buses. The taxi ride to town is about 12-15 euros one way. A taxi to Santa park or Santa village is 20-24 Euros one way.A taxi to the airport is 40 Euros one way. I didn't see the rooms but there is a nice lobby area with a fireplace, TV and free internet access. There was also a movie theatre which showed movies every afternoon for the kids (even with free popcorn!) There was a kids playroom nearby too. However, the most spectacular part was the restaurant upstairs that had windows from top to bottom and overlooked the ski field and mountain trees. It was beautiful to eat and look at snow covered trees and the distant lights of the city at night. The food was excellent, though the a-la-carte was better than the buffet. There were plastic sleds that we borrowed from reception to slide down the hills but they go really fast and are quite dangerous when you hit a bump and go airborne! We did use the sleds to go down the road to a small supermarket when we arrived as it was a fair walk and the kids got lazy so we pulled them along!

SKIING- Unfortunately we didn't ski as we had a 5 yr old who had never cross-country skied before so we didn't try but I would have loved to cross country ski in this extremely beautiful area. There was a downhill run with one chairlift but I didn't think it was worth it for us (and we had just come from skiing in the French Alps). It is only light for about 5 hours. There is also a toboggan run but it was closed as it wasn't cold enough (it has to be < -5 degrees) to make snow for the toboggans.

Overall, I am so glad we stayed here in this picturesque resort in the lovely cabin. My kids enjoyed the snow and sledding more than Santa almost! It was worth the money we spent on taxis each day but you have to be prepared to do that or walk the 45 mins into town.
We spent Xmas Eve here and there was a xmas tree that the staff brought out decorations for and the kids put them on. After dinner Santa came to visit in another room and the kids went in and got gifts which was a nice touch.

Room Tip: A large cabin is suitable for 4-6 people but has steep stairs to upstairs.
