For a while now I had wanted to say in a glass-topped cabin and was very excited when I read about Apukka in a travel blog post regarding Rovaniemi. Unfortunately, what we got was nowhere close to the luxurious experience suggested by the travel blogger or the price of the cabin.
Before getting into all of the negatives, a quick note about the positives. First, the food is excellent, especially the salmon we had at dinner one night and some blueberry-filled cookies that were available most days for breakfast. Second, they kindly allowed us to take our toddler to see a baby husky on our last morning before checking out. Third, our cabin had radiant floor heating--its only redeeming quality, but a much-appreciated one when the temperatures are below freezing.
But beyond that, this was the most disappointing hotel experience I can remember out of the dozens of hotels that I have stayed at in the past few years. First, our cabin did not have an anteroom for removing boots and other winter gear, unlike other cabins. As a result, it was nearly impossible to keep dirt out of the cabin. Third, although we were there for three nights, they never once cleaned our room. (They tried to make up for this by treating us to dinner after we complained, but we already had plans that evening.) Fourth, the fold-out couch in our cabin (which our toddler was to sleep on) was filled with pieces of crackers from a previous guest. When I raised all of this at check out, I was given an excuse regarding the failure to tidy during our stay that was inconsistent with our actual experience and our other concerns were not addressed at all.
