“Great for lunch”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

Went for lunch to the ice restaurant, and did a tour of the ice hotel, including the suites. The restaurant experience was great. Even if the food was only so-so, to actually eat off a table made of ice, whilst you are seating on a chair also made of ice is an experience you do not have every day (and probably would not want to, but to do it once is great). The suites have a great wall decoration but if you were expecting a bathroom you would be disappointed - if you need the loo in the middle of the night you are in for a long trek. All in all, I would certainly recommend going there, seeing the place, eating a meal at the ice restaurant but then go and sleep somewhere else.

Have just returned from a week at the Snow Village and was the best holiday I've had to date!

We had a cabin for the week with one night in the ice hotel, plus all the activities, snow shoes, snow mobiling, husky sledging, reindeer sledging, even hired cross country skis. The ice hotel was beautiful even a slide and mini golf all from ice. The staff were friendly & helpful the food was good, we'd e-mailed in advance requesting if a birthday cake could be provided for my step son which they did and made a fuss of him, all the staff we saw that day wished him happy birthday. One very happy nine year old!

Sleeping in the ice hotel is not for everyone, it wasn't the most comfortable I've ever been but its an ice bed, and that they have to leave the lights on made it difficult for me to sleep but thats just me the two with me had no problems sleeping!

Having looked forward to this holiday for 8 months I was worried by the negative reviews, all I would say is when reading negative reviews remember you are above the arctic circle miles from anywhere and is an experience rather than a 'holiday', if you don't like the cold or the outdoors this is not for you. Perhaps I'm more aware of what to expect having visited most of the Nordic Countries before

Our first ever cold winter holiday and we enjoyed it so much we will definitely be going back to Finnish Lapland probably independently to explore more of what is a beautiful country.

Room Tip: Beware if staying for a week as the cabins can be very spread out and some had a 15-20 min walk to t...

It was such a great tourist experience, but don't expect a 5 star hotel, expect a glamour camping experience. I wouldn't go a second time, but it was very unique and worth the visit. The walls are carved by artists into all sorts of images. Truly amazing. There were 2 downsides:

1. As it is a real tourist attraction, you only have access to your room after 10pm, so you must plan an activity then a leisurely dinner at the ice bar to fill in time until then.

2. There is no toilet in your room, and the toilet is a long, cold walk away, so plan in advance!!! Also, there are very few toilets and I think only 1 shower for all the guests. If you treat it like camping, you won't be dissapointed if you don't shower.

I would really recommend the reindeer safari. It was probably one of the best experiences I've had here.

Another tip: on arrival, buy 3 packets of hand warmers for 2 euro each.

The first set is to pop in your shoes while you eat dinner. As the floor is ice, your toes start to freeze if you just sit at the dinner table doing nothing. Put the second set in your sleeping bag, so it's a bit warm when you get in, and as soon as you wake up, drop the 3rd set in your shoes. Your shoes have been sitting on the cold ice floor all night, so it's good to break the chill before you put your feet in!

The hotel offers very little by way of extras. No welcome drink, a bar that shut at 8.45, no warm room to spend the evening (staff refused to light the fire as they said it would make the room too hot if anyone wanted to sleep there rather than in the ice rooms but they admitted that it was cold because the sauna was on!) Anything extra had to be paid for: sauna, ice minigolf, milk for the tea and coffee in the waiting room. We were locked in at 10pm with only the one uncomfortable room to sit in, which was too small for all the guests; basically we were meant to go to bed at 10.00. There was one toilet/shower for men and one for women. There were about 30 people staying, (not the maximum) so huge waits to brush teeth etc. It was very expensive but like a Youth Hostel, staff, friendly enough, referred to us as customers not guests, which sums it up as it felt like profit was the motive and the owners knew that people are very unlikely to return. Supper in the restaurant was good with tasty local food.

The Snow Village is a truly brilliant experience. This was my 2nd visit in 6 years, this time with a large group of adults and children, staying for 4 nights. It's not cheap, but what do you expect - it's not a Travelodge in Grimsby! . I booked the accommodation (5 log cabins) and activities directly with The Snow Village. This was made extremely easy by staff member Heini Korvenkangas. All the staff - reception, safari guides, restaurant & bar - were very friendly and helpful. Our various cabins were clean and sufficient for our needs, The restaurant menu is varied, with many dishes having a Lappish theme, which can be served either in the warm Log Restaurant, or in the Ice Restaurant. Drinking Vodka shots from Ice Glasses in the Ice Bar after dinner is a memorable experience.

We did Husky, Reindeer, and Snowmobile Safari's from the Snow Village. All of which were well organised and really great fun. Yes, it can be cold being outside for a couple of hours in minus temperatures, but that's only to be expected being well within the Arctic Circle!

The Snow Hotel itself is a spectacular creation. Even if you're not spending the night in an Ice Room/Suite, it's great fun to explore the corridors and view the carvings, Ice Sculptures, and the themed Ice Suites. We did not stay in the the Ice Hotel on this occasion, but did in 2007. Although the inside temperature is a few degrees below zero, the arctic sleeping bags kept you warm throughout the night, and we had a great nights sleep in a stunning Ice Suite.

I wouldn't be put off by negative reviews from those doing expensive package day trips that last a only few hours. If you're willing to avoid "Santa Season" and spend a little bit more to stay a few days, you'll get much better value.

All in all, our party of 15 people all had an amazing time. Totally brilliant.

We stayed with two families. The ride on snow scooter is 45km and takes about 2 hours and is fun. The snow part of te hotel is nice the fixed part is poor. Dinner in the icebar is really special. bedtime is set at 22:00. Make sure you have what you need since you are locked in and have no access to fixed part of hotel anymore.
The room are special make sure you pick one with no bright light since is is not switched of. Red light is best.

The buildings out of snow and ice are fantastic. It is a truly memorable experience to wander this complex, lit with colored lights and see all the snow and ice carvings. You feel like you are in a dream or in a movie set. A must see. The staff where very friendly and gave us a tour.

I had dinner and stayed the night. Sitting at tables made of ice on benches made of ice was great, quite unreal, in a good way. The food was quite good, nothing to get too exited about.

The overnight experience could be improved upon. I found it to be very like camping, not really good value for money considering what I payed.
You can't lock your luggage in the snow igloo rooms, so you leave it in lockers at reception. At 10pm reception closed and all the staff go home, leaving the guest to fend for them selves. As reception is locked one can no longer get anything out of the lockers, so get everything you need for bed before 10pm.
There is only a curtain instead of a door, so it is not completely private, and you can hear people walking around during the night. A bit like sleeping in a tent.
They give you a sleeping bag with an inner liner, which keeps you nice and warm, but is a bit claustrophobic as you have to zip the sleeping bag right up tight not be cold.
There where not enough sleeping bag liners to go round the night I stayed there. As the staff had left there was not much to be done. We could have called the emergency phone, I suppose.
There is only one male and female toilet each, for 25 people or more. The male toilet was slightly smelly, and there was only one shower room. Several showers, but not everybody whats to shower with strangers.
There was a room in a real building in the complex, with tea and coffee making facilities, but no milk or whitener.
The breakfast buffet was good.
I probably would stay there again, but come prepared.
