Spar Hotel is a 3 star hotel that is 10 minutes walk from the busy avenue with many restaurants. It is fairly priced at about 100 euros a night. However, with a window overlooking the E6 motorway, good luck getting to sleep at night, sans Ambien!

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the E6

I had a great time in Gothenburg, but the hotel wasn’t the high point. The room was serviceable, but hardly a model example of Swedish design: it was small, badly arranged, and for a double the bed was very small. The duvet seemed more like a single duvet, but the staff didn’t hesitate to provide a second one when we asked.
I wasn’t blown away by the cleanliness of the hotel either (dust on the bathroom shelves, grubby carpets in the hallways).

The hotel’s saving grace was the breakfast buffet, which has a lovely array of herring, cheeses, cereals, fruit platters, eggs, and a make-your-own-waffle machine. And the location was good, a short walk from a tram stop, and the staff were helpful in advising us on transport.

Let’s face it, at Swedish prices, budget options are very tempting, and as long as you don’t expect the earth, this should be a solid choice for location, breakfast and helpful staff. But if you have high standards, or are looking for somewhere with a bit of charm, look a bit higher on the TripAdvisor rankings!

I spent four days here at the beginning of september by buisness. Hotel is decent. It is located nearby the great traffic square, average, but functional enterier. Restaurant service will please you if you are willing to put the dishes you have used to its place where it is cleaned. It is just you expect of the hotel its range. You can reach the city center in 20 minutes by foot. The city is interesting european town , which will amuse you and which I find very safe place. Greetings from Belgrade. Ceda.

I spent 6 nights at this hotel and it was after all a very good experience. The single room has a large bed and is decorated in a frendlier way. The room as well as the bathroom were very, very clean, everything was conforable. I missed the sweeties from the breakfast, some coockies would be great, but anyway they are not so heallthier so forget about them...
The sole con is that the hotel is a bit hidden and for the first time is a bit hard to find it. By foot is about 25 minutes from the centre, but get a tram and will be much more easier.
Some travellers said thay were upset becasue of the highway nearby the hotel. The highway is really nearby the hotel, but windows are very good and you will not be disturbed.
I would stay there again for sure.

This hotel does not sell itself to be something it is not. if you want a cheap, clean, basic hotel then this is the place for you. My visit ensured I only spent a minimum amount of time in the hotel, so i didnt need any luxuries. Location about 20 min walk to center. Towells / rooms made up everyday. Yes there is a very busy road outside and yes it can be heard from the room, although for me, it was not enough to distrub my sleep. The bed was single which took me back to my childhood! Overall a decent, basic place, more importantly it was very clean.

The hotel is cheap and located a bit outside the city center of Gothenburg. I don't understand those people, who write that it's placement is central. It is not. It's a 15-20 minutes walk to the city center, and it is located in a quiet area, which resembles an old industrial neigbourhood, which is slowly getting transformed into apartments.

The room was well furbished and clean, and had free internet. Unfortunately our room faced a major road, with a lot of noise in the morning and evening hours, even with the windows closed it was some what noisy.

We opted for a B&B solution, and the breakfast was good and had plenty of choices, although purely continental in style.

If you need a cheap place to stay in Gothenburg, and you don't mind walking a bit, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel. Ask for a room not facing the main road nearby, though.

Dear Ecchi,

thank you for your review of our hotel. The hotel is situated 3km from the central station in Göteborg and the neighbourhood is going through some changes, with many very modern apartment houses being built, changing the area from an industrial area to a more residential area. I hope we´ll see you again next time you visit Göteborg, and then we´ll try to accomodate your wish with a room not facing the road.

Kind regards
TWibeck

I am a student and picked this hotel as they offer a discounted student rate if you book through them directly. The price they offered was amazing and was only a few pounds more than the quotes I got from some iffy looking youth hostels in the city!

Some people have slated the location of this hotel in other reviews, but I don't agree at all. It is an easy walk by the river into the town centre or in the other direction towards Liseberg. The tram stop is only two away from the central station, and is only a few minutes to the hotel. The bus stop is closer but I used the tram as they were more frequent. Once you know where you are it is easy to get around, and it is refreshing not to be right in the middle of things, the transport systems in the city are so good it is not a hassle at all if you are feeling too tired to walk- no need for taxis! The hotel is nearby a fairly busy road, but inside it was very quiet so this did not impact on my visit or sleep patterns.

I was in a single room, it came with a very comfy bed, hairdryer, wardrobe space, a nice guide to the city, tv including bbc world news and film/entertainment channels with english programmes (swedish subs), a spacious en-suite bathroom with towels and the most important thing the room had- free wireless! The whole hotel is very clean and functional, it felt fresh and new.

The staff were great, very friendly and helpful- I didn't check out the bar/cafe but it seemed lively in the evening (not in a raucous way, just in a nice casual way) when I walked past. Didn't check out the spar/sauna area either as I didn't have time. In the summer there is also a roof terrace bar. The breakfast is pretty good with the usual breads, meats, cheeses, cereals, juice, tea, coffee and a make your own waffle iron... plenty of food and free newspapers, lots of space so breakfast didn't feel like a fight. They have long serving hours too 6.30-10.00 (or 11 on the weekends) and I even saw that if you had to checkout before 6.30 to let them know, and they would rustle up a breakfast for you- I thought that was very considerate.

So I would stay here again, even if I had enough money to spend on one of the more central hotels, for the price you'd be silly not to stay at this lovely hotel.
