Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: Welcome to one of the largest botanical gardens in Northern Europe. The cultivated part occupies 40 acres and holds about 12 000 species. It is a botanical garden with a strong emphasis on horticulture and the garden is divided into different sections linked by lawns with fine trees and shrubs. You will find a kitchen garden, a herb garden, perennial and annual borders, a Japanese glade, a rhododendron valley and a stunning rock garden with a waterfall. In the bulb garden you find species that are not grown anywhere else. The Greenhouses have more than 4 000 species including a large collection of orchids and carnivorous plants. The Eastern Island tree, extinct in its natural locality, is preserved here. The garden is bordering a nature reserve where also the arboretum is located.

“Small but wonderful”

Beautifully laid out and with some excellent greenhouse exhibits, the Botaniska Tradgarden is well worth the visit for nature lovers and a wonderful location to share tea or coffee with a friend.

“Be sure to watch for thorns”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

From the outward appearance, it seemed that there would be a fee for entering the gardens. If there is, consider my review a three star review or just sneak in, both good.

The gardens themselves are quite vast with a large greenhouse and a concert venue on the side. Most of the plants appear to be native to the northern regions except for those in the greenhouse, which vary from desert to tropics. It was nice to get reacquainted with my old friend cactaceae again even if he could be a thorn in my side at times.

Final thoughts: If in need of a respite from the hustle and bustle of Gothenburg, pay a visit to the greener side of the fence.

“Lovely, especially spring/early summer.”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

Gothenburgs botanical garden boasts most ordinary and some very different plants, flowers and trees. They are arranged around different themes, like the herbs garden or rock landscape. This is a great place for a romantic walk, Sunday family outing, pick-nick or learning experience.

I don't know anything about flowers, but I found this to be a very wonderful place to spend an hour. Very pretty. Nice greenhouses and outdoor exhibits.

“A gem”
Reviewed August 28, 2012

A bit like the RHS gardens at Wisley, a bit like Kew Gardens - just lovely to wander around with options for short or long walks. Well worth a visit (but mind the midgies!).
