“Great service, great interior, great location! Love it!”

Very friendly hotel staff and nice breakfast buffet! The ambiance of the hotel is just amazing! You can tell the decoration and interior has history but at the same time, it is fresh and very clean. It is not a usual generic big chain hotel but it is absolute up to the standard. If you come in the summer, there is a patio where you can sit and bath in the sun with a cup of coffee. Small room but has everything you need. Great location in the midst of Nordstan, where there is many good restaurants, cafes and shops. Super close to public transportation. It is a little bit hard to find parking here but there is a P/Huset in front of the hotel. Parts of it was under renovation while I visited so it was not a good parking facility. Over all, an amazing stay and I will definitely come here again!

I will admit that I booked our recent stay at the Hotel Royal based in large part on the fact that it was so highly rated on this site. That, and I love staying at non-chain hotels while on vacation. This hotel did not disappoint, to say the least.

It may be hard to tell from the outside, but the minute you walk in the front doors of this hotel, you can tell that it is something special. The lobby is uniquely shaped and the main stairs practically gush historical. The staff at the front desk were extremely friendly; they even walked us to the elevator and held the elevator door for us while we lugged our suitcases onto it. That alone says something: I feel like most hotel staff will just vacantly point you in the right direction of the elevator, then leave you to fend for yourself.

The room was beautiful and had a strong antique charm to it, the only thing that added a modern touch was the TV. We had rented a Superior Double, which I would highly recommend for the few extra kroner it costs because the room was one of the largest we've had in Europe and featured three large windows overlooking the streets. Breakfast was included in the room rate as well.

Overall, I had no complaints about this hotel whatsoever, they satisfied my every need and the location was in a very easy walking distance of the central station, yet far enough away to not feel dangerous at night. It is also a very close walk to "The Avenue" or the main shopping and dining street there.

I would highly recommend staying here and would happily book here again myself if my travels take me back through Gothenburg.

According to the information book in our room, the Royal Hotel is the oldest in Gothenburg and has been run by the same family for 20 years. From the moment you enter the front door it is very obvious that the hotel is family owned and not part of a large chain.

We arrived at the hotel before 10am after a very early flight into the city and were greeted by a welcoming and friendly young man on reception. We had previously enquired about leaving our luggage prior to formal check in and this was possible, however despite the early arrival there was a room available on the third floor although it overlooked the street. We were even offered breakfast in view of our early arrival!

Our room was of reasonable size with comfortable double bed complete with individual duvets that tend to be the norm in Scandinavia. The en-suite facilities comprised loo and shower which suited us fine.

Breakfast was a self service buffet with a good selection of juice, cereal, bread, meat, cheese and included a hot option of scrambled eggs and sausages if desired. Free afternoon tea and cake for guests is also available in the lobby.

The only thing that prevents us giving the hotel an excellent rating was the noise disturbance from passing revellers in the street in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings though we acknowledge that this was outwith the control of the hotel.

We would certainly stay there again and can recommend this hotel to others with the proviso that they request a room overlooking the inner courtyard if they are anything other than very sound sleepers.

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the inner courtyard, these are likely to be quieter, especially over the...

I stayed at the Hotel Royal recently on a business trip and would warmly recommend it. It was clean (the crucial thing) and good value for money, but I also really appreciated the nice 1900s atmosphere, friendly staff, and excellent breakfast buffet. Would certainly stay there again.

Stayed here while on a short business trip. It's a nice and very cosy hotel. The room was small but I'm not complaining. The hotel is located in town and it was easy to walk to everything we needed. We went out for dinner and the city was all but shut down. Gothenburg certainly bunkers down on a winters evening.

From the moment you arrive, you feel at home. The receptionist, a young man, could not be more helpful and pleasant. Location is great, you are near the train station and town center. Our room was so pretty with a rug on the wooden floor. Beds have green woolen throws in case of need. Very clean too. Breakfast was quite good, with the best scrambled eggs and sausages!
The place is lovely and well taken care of. Highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed here in July for two night and we had a wonderful time. We stayed in a superior double room, The room was really nice, with good space and very clean. I especially liked the size of bathroom.

The staff was great, very helpful and gave nice tips about what to do in Gothenburg. I also liked the nice backyard were you can drink coffee an eat cake.

Another good thing about this hotel is it´s location, you can easily walk to the city center.

The only negative thing was that there are no air conditioner, so we had to leave the window open at the night and it was a bit noisy. Especially when the trucks started driving in the morning.
