Owner description: Popular fish market and restaurant housed in a beautiful old building which resembles a church.
Reviewed March 15, 2013

Oldest fish market in town.. It is said that there you can find the best and most fresh fish.. Yes, fish is so, but in the city almost all the fish dealers have more or less the same quality since they all buy from the harbor.. It is worth visiting. Dont think it is too big. There is a restaurant , cafe and take away options also.

This building is called "fish church" becuse its a market hall for fish and the architect was thinking of an church then designing it. There are stands of fish and seafood along the sides. It´s interesting to look at different fishes, and sometimes there are fishes you havn´t seen before. There is also a cheese shop there. At the ends of the building there are coffe shops and a reesaurant. The restaurant has many options to people fond of fish and seafood, but not very cheap. The restaurant is open daytime monday-saturday only, closed sundays. If there is good weather you may sit outdoors at the sguare behind the bulding with view over the water.

We walked across the river and found the famous Fiskekyrkan, a stone fish market built to resemble a church. I had to laugh at the sign posted with the rather funny English translation:
Extra cost for "whine"
Extra cost for "whine"
Inside the "Fish Church" we found after stall of fresh fish and various concoctions thereof lining the interior of the long "church" walls. The vaulted ceilings did give a hallowed feel to the practice of fish selling.
It was cold and pouring rain so taking a wonderful fish lunch outside was out of the question. We weren't that hungry but the temptations were great and, well, it was raining and we were there, and the other options were not good, so we climbed the steps to the Restaurant Gabriel (appropriately named for a "fish church") to the balcony overlooking the large market where we enjoyed a leisurely lunch of a sweet canned bread (flavored, I think, with cardamom), fried herring, mashed potatoes and lingonberries. Delicious!

Wow. What a place. It's a small little building but tons of energy. If you're a seafood fan, this is your heaven. There are so many choices and options. We tried the seafood quiche, lobster bisque, fish and chips... best I've ever tasted. I highly recommend a quick visit to this place. My kid is not a fan of seafood, so she picked up some teriyaki chicken in the Japanese restaurant next door.

Gothenburg cuisine is 99% about sea food and Feskekorka is heaven for any seafood lover.
It is an indoor sea food market and also has fish- and seafood restaurants in the building. It has a nice history that is well worth looking up before your visit.
Feskekorkan is a must see when in Gothenburg and it doesn’t cost anything to go in and soak up the genuine Gothenburg seafood atmosphere and fishy smell ;-)
