Hotel Vanilj was one of the better hotels I visited in Sweden. My room was comfortable, light and airy, and larger than average (though still very small). The bathroom was clean and spacious. Overall, the hotel is very clean and well-kept. The staff was helpful and accomodated a change in my reservation with no hassle. Breakfast is included and served in the cafe downstairs, which has seating in an outdoor courtyard and is also a good spot for lunch. The location was good, on a quiet side street (Kyrkogatan) but within walking distance to the heart of the city. It's also a short walk to the tram lines at Kungsportsplatsen, which will take you anywhere else you might want to go. With the tram, it was easy to get to the central train station. I would definitely stay here again when in Göteborg.

Stayed in Hotel Vanij in Feb 07 and were delighted with it. It is very clean, comfortable and very welcoming. Excellent breakfasts served in the little coffee shop downstairs. Hotel is very central and we walked it easily ( 15 mins) from Bus Station where Airport bus arrives/departs.

A good tip for lunch on a Sunday is make your way to Hotel Gothia Towers ( near the conference centre) for a superb scandic buffet which goes on till 5pm ( cost approx £16 per head) you can go back as often as required to fill up and all whilst listening to the wonderful piano playing from live pianist!

Excellent location, helpful staf, ecellent breakfast in the cafe located in the hotel.

Only 3 parking spaces, and a very tight squeeze in if you have a big car, but very OK for the location in the middle of town. Walking distance to everywhere in the central city.

We loved our stay and will use this hotel if we someday return to Gothenburg.
Next time we probably will park at "Nordstan" shopping center and forget about the car for our stay. (5-10min walk from the Hotel)

Arrival
We arrived into Gothenburg City Airport on Ryanair and took a fixed price taxi (check with the driver before you set off) to the hotel for 320 Kr (c. £24.60). The journey took approximately 25 minutes. It is also possible to transfer from city airport by bus for 50Kr (single) per person to the central bus station which is about 5 minutes walk from the hotel.

The Hotel
The hotel is very centrally located, just off the main thoroughfare, and only 5 minutes walk from the main tourist office.
The reception and rooms are located from the first floor upwards, as the ground floor is a coffee shop (witha nice courtyard) where you get breakfast.
The rooms were all unique and nicely furnished (Ikea furnishings!). En-suites were nice and modern, but had (large) showers only not baths. The TV had Eurosport and MTV.
Breakfast is buffet style and includes breads, cheeses, fruit, boiled eggs etc. On one day there was also cookies, which were nice but I suspect were left over from the coffee shop the previous day.
We opted to have one lunch (Quiche, Jacket Potatoes etc.) in the hotel courtyard.
In terms of value, I would suggest the Vanilj would normally be very good. However, because we travelled the weekend the Volvo Ocean race ended in Gothenburg (we didn't realise this when we booked flights) we paid 1200Kr for a double per night (c. £92.30 per night which was quite expensive). I understand the usual weekend rate which was not available when we visited is a lot less than this?

Sightseeing
There is lots to see and do, and I would recommend the "Gothenburg Pass" - available from the tourist office for 295Kr (for 48 hours). At less than £25 this gives free entry to the majority of the city attractions, including the excellent Liseberg Theme Park (rides extra), Maritim Boat Museum, Universeum Science and Nature attraction, and boat trips. You also get free public transport on trams, buses and boats.
The only thing to be aware of is that the Paddan city boat trip can only be taken after 3pm.

Coming Home
We caught the bus back to the airport (two for one with the Gothenburg pass), but then our flight was cancelled (last Ryanair flight of the night)! We then ended up staying another night (at the Hotel Opera - see separate review) and booking ourselves home on a "Flyme" flight. Don't expect any help from Ryanair if your flight is cancelled - we were advised the earliest availability on a Ryanair flight was five days later - and the Flyme flights and extra days accommodation cost nearly £150 each.

Overall it was still an excellent trip.

Great hotel. Rooms spotless, with a very good breakfast. My elderly parents stayed for 1 night to sleep off some jet lag after flying from the US to visit us in Goteborg and it was just right--very good affordable choice. Warning for other senoirs however: there is no elevator so you must be able to climb stairs.

We stayed here last week and would recommend this hotel. We are a family of four and shared a family room. The plus sides are the fantastic location (very central plus also less than five minutes walk to either of the two multiscreen cinemas - good when your children are interested in going to the cinema (Hollywood films shown in English with Swedish sub titles)), very nice cafe on site, good value (taking into account central location etc), helpful staff (reserved like most Swedes but very willing to assist when asked). We also had a fridge (and hob) in the room, which was handy. On the downside, might be pretty hot in mid-summer plus quite noisy early in the morning with window open. Unexplained bellringing (multiple peals, i.e. over forty) around 8 a.m. more or less every morning from the nearby Domskyrkan (cathedral).
Overall we would have no hesitation staying at this hotel again.

We stayed at the Hotel Vanilj on the last night of our vacation, and I wished we could have stayed more than one day. Our room (22) was clean, comfortable, and roomy, with lovely furniture and a comfortable bed.
As others have noted, the staff at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast in the cafe was delicious.
We had a car and they have a small parking lot (3 spaces) for 90kr/night. Given that the hotel is in a busy part of town on a very narrow street, we were happpy to have this available.
The only negative, as others have noted, is that you have to walk up one flight of stairs to the reception, and for us, a second flight of stairs to our room. For some travellers, this might be an issue.
