I stayed here for three days while attending a Nordic conference on the seas. Uddevalla is a gem of a town, hidden upstream on an ancient fjord, a former Viking base, more recently a shipbuilding center, now seeking to become an active seaport and touristic attraction. I liked the town quite a lot and the hotel was wonderful. Classic, a former refuge for Norwegians escaping the Nazis during WW 2, very modern inside but not plastic. The facilities were complete (the large indoor pool room was beautiful, with an outlook over the fjord) food was great -- typical Nordic cafeteria style, but upscale -- and the staff incomparable. Every one was eager to help in anything I needed to get done, from copying materials in color, perfectly, to getting me to the train on time: when the taxis got overloaded, Moses was delegated by the VP, who herself acted as chauffeur for other clients, to drive the remainder of us to the station. Is that service, or what? The train ride from Gothenburg to Uddevalla is beautiful, by the way, or a car or bus ride only takes an hour.
