“Nice hotel”
Reviewed February 6, 2009

This hotel was like a B&B right in the centre of the Old Town in Stockholm. It was in a lovely old building tucked away down one of the narrow atmospheric alleys. The actual room reminded me of B&Bs in the UK with low ceiling and exposed beams. It was not spacious but cosy, and nicely furnished. There were tea/coffee making facilities in the room which was a nice touch. Bathroom extras included wardrobe, valuables safe, and heated towel rail. They also supplied Molton Brown toiletries much to my delight!

Breakfast was in the small cafe on the ground floor. No cooked meal was offered, however the buffet spread was ample.

This hotel would not be suitable for disabled or elderly travellers as there was a very steep, narrow, winding staircase to get to the rooms. This added to the experience for us, but would not be accessible at all to people who cannot manage stairs. You would probably need to carry small children up/down the stairs also.

I would definitely stay here again as the hotel was lovely and quaint, and in an ideal location.

This B&B is in a fabulous location -- right in the middle of Gamla Stan, one of my favorite places on earth. Staying here is like staying medieval Stockholm. It's a very old building (1607) with sloping floors and a tiny spiral staircase. It will not work for the disabled or elderly. But if you are fit, it is awesome. It is loaded with character and beautifully decorated in a traditional Swedish style that also seems contemporary. It's lovely. We had a large room with lots of windows on a corner. There were two comfortable chairs plus a desk and chair. The breakfast was good, though the breakfast room is quite tiny. It was fine for me, but my husband felt a bit like Gulliver, though he did enjoy the food. The woman who was there was lovely and helpful. We had an early flight our last morning, so she made us sandwiches and gave us yogurt and drinks since we had to leave before they served breakfast. There were two drawbacks. One is that although the building is on a quiet courtyard, people do walk through late at night and you can hear them talking. We were there on a Friday and Saturday night; it might not be as bad on a weekday. It didn't keep me awake, but I did hear noise at times. This may be a problem anywhere in Gamla Stan; I don't know. It was definitely worth a little noise to be right in the center of things in such a charming place. The other drawback is the bathroom which is teeny tiny. I don't mind a small bathroom, but the shower is right in the room, and unfortunately, the drain backed up, so a) you couldn't take a shower for more than 2 or 3 minutes, and b) the entire bathroom floor was wet after your shower. Despite these drawbacks, we were really happy with the place.

The term 'hotel' is misleading - it is a cafe with rooms. It is a characterful place in a very old building.
The location in the middle of the old town is excellent..
The room was large, clean and nicely furnished except there was little hanging space or drawers. A good en suite shower room. An excellent breakfast.
Problems - very steep staircase. 3 floors up. Very noisy squeaky floor above .The floor sloped causing giddiness.Lighting was poor for reading.
It would make a good base for adults 20 - 60 - not suitable for unfit or disabled, families or the elderly.

For a short stay in Stockholm, this hotel in the old city could not be better placed for geting around. The hotel itself is in keeping with the area sort of olde world, a tall narrow house, with steep stairs with only six rooms. Our stay was lovely the rooms were really comfortable, and even though there is not someone around 24hrs a day, the staff were really friendly and helpful. Breakfast is great and eaten in a small cafe attached to the hotel. If you like a small personal hotel then this is for you, I cannot recommend it enough.

We enjoyed our one night stay at Sven Vintappare very much. We arrived in Stockholm on an early flight and our room wasn't ready yet but they took care of our luggage while we went to get breakfast.
It is very, very small and the stairs to the rooms are steep but it is in a great location in the center of Old Town. The inside is charming for those who like an old fashioned feel and something different. They serve a good breakfast and the young woman who was there was helpful with our questions about sightseeing.
I would recommend asking to see the rooms as some are bigger than others.

I really like the time around Lucia. The dark nights are light up with the candles in the windows. So I visited Stockholm the last 5th Decembers.

This time I choose the Sven Vintappare Hotel. A small hotel with 6 double rooms and one suite. It’s located in a small street near the main street of Gamla Stan(the old town). So you are in the middle of Stockholm. The next underground station is not far. There is a small café in the hotel. You also get your breakfast there.

After arriving you get your room key and the pin code for the door. The code is important. There is no 24h service at this hotel. The friendly staff is at the hotel from breakfast time until the café is closed. After that you need the code to get inside the hotel. You get also a telephone number if you need help at night.

After some high stairs you get to your room. My superior room was a big room with a double bed, 2 chairs with a small table and a working desk. There is also a document safe, a small LCD TV and a CD player/radio combination. I also liked the pantry with dishes and water heater.

The only two things I didn’t like were the small bathroom and the not soundproofed windows. Both things can’t be changed. There is no room for a bigger bathroom and the new windows would not fit to an old building.

The breakfast was really good. I got roll, croissant, ham, cheese, jam and yogurt. Some orange juice and a good green tea make it perfect.

Sometimes I like to change my reviews. I wrote for the Hilton Slussen : “My favourite hotel in Stockholm”. This changed after staying at the Sven Vintappare. You don’t feel like a hotel guest. It’s like having a flat in Stockholm with the comfort of a hotel. Now I have a second favourite hotel in Stockholm.

The hotel is renovated with good taste, gustavian furniture, ceramic oven (just for looks, not working, unfortunately), low doors etc. The bathroom is modern, so there's no need to sacrifice convenience for romantic atmosphere. The personnel was very helpful and flexible. The location is quiet (20 meters off the main walkways/shopping streets) still the good restaurants and nice shops of the Old Town a minute's walk away). True, the stairs are narrow and steep, so anyone with trouble climbing may not like them. The hotel is small, so we just hope that they have a vacant room when we visit Stockholm next time.
