Best Western Hotel Karlaplan
Ranked #104 of 154 Hotels in Stockholm
Reviewed March 29, 2010

Just returned from the Hotel Karlaplan and would never stay there again. The area is quite a long walk away from the city centre and there are practically no restaurants close by. I had booked half board, expecting an evening buffet - only to be told upon arrival that they had cancelled offering any dinner. The hotel does not have a restaurant and it was difficult to find any food except from a supermarket nearby (many restaurants in Stockholm are closed on Sunday evenings). Worst of all was the room - I have never evver slept in such a small room before: it had space for a single bed only; one could not even stand besides the bed. Next to the bed was the tiny showerroom. When opening the door one was standing right next to a steep staircase and easily fall if one did not take special care. TheTV had Swedish programmes only, except for the BBC World News channel. On Sunday the cleaning staff took away the dirty towels but did not replace them with clean ones. The woman at the reception was very unfriendly - she may have been used to complaining guests already, and did not even apologize for not offering the promised dinner buffet. When I asked for another room she merely said that none was available. If I had not prepaid the room for three nights, I would have left then and there.
Altogether, booking this hotel was a big mistake and made me enjoy my stay in Stockholm less than I would have otherwise.

This hotel is really nothing special. A small 'double' room with two singles pushed together. Reception staff of very variable courtesy and helpfulness. Breakfast was good but the hotel lacks a decent seating area. You could do a lot worse than stay here but if you are looking for something special go elsewhere.

he karlaplan hotel might not have all the characteristics of a 4 star hotel but it offers more than other hotels. I booked a mini double room and I knew what to expect ( a small room) but the room was nice and clean and nicely furnished. It had a plasma Tv screen, a DVD player. The bathroom was not small and it had a nice large shower, a hairdryer and a rack heater to dry towels. The hotel might not be at the center of stockholm but it was just 3 stops away by tube from the city center. I don't understand those people who wrote that it is at the outskirts of the city: it is at the end of zone 1 and for me who live in london where it takes half an hour to get from one side to the other of zone 1, the distance seemed ridiculous. The bonus of this hotel is that they offer an evening buffet which is like a dinner. We used to have breakfast in the morning and than go back to the hotel at 6 pm to get the evening food: we did not spend anything in food and in stockholm consider that the food is pretty expensive. staff is friendly. We were very pleased with our choice.

Booked a two single beds room, but got a Plus room i gues, it was roomy and had a flatscreen TVset, DVD player (free DVDs in lobby), shaver, touthbrush, ironingboard, robes, cofee and tee, hairdryer, free Wii-fi. Beds very comfy. Only negatives were a dirty coffeecup and the lack of a safetybox.

The staff was very friendly and helpfull. The included food was okej and a nice tuch, breakfast was not as good as expected by a 4-star hotel in Stockholm. Location is good but not among the best.
Clarion gave guests free admission to Gröna Lund amusement park (a $10 value per guest) nice!

If getting a good rate we would stay here again.

Stayed for 3 nights for a special long weekend. Had booked a double/twin room and arrived to find we'd been given a third bed in a double room; barely enough space to walk around. Asked immediately for a change of room/removal of the third bed and nothing happened for the duration. The room was well appointed and bathroom great but there are no blackout curtains which in July meant lots of light in the room until very late at night and early in the morning (3 a.m.).

I would say the restaurant is canteen style rather than buffet. The breakfast selection is very good but sadly not the same for supper. I booked for a dinner buffet and this is not what you get - a light buffet is on offer and that's stretching it; 2 hot dishes and salad. Again on a canteen style and beware the hotel is "dry". There are no alcoholic drinks, no wine list - nothing.

The hotel is well situated for the underground trains and only a couple of stops into the centre of Stockholm; which in itself is a beautiful capital city. An investment in the Stockholm card is good value and worth it. The city is a late riser with not a lot open before 10.00.

Loved Stckholm but this hotel failed to meet my expectations and their lack of attention to my concerns was pretty much 100%. An example, we came back to find a clean room save for dirty tea/coffee cups from our morning cuppa and when phoning reception to ask for clean cups to be sent up; we were told we could collect clean cups from the restaurant aka canteen ourselves. We're weren't impressed.

I would respectfully suggest you look elsewhere for accommodation.

We syated two nights at this hotel. We choosed it becuase it was close to Wasa Museum, Gröna Lund amusement park and the Skansen Zoo. We had booked Double room.

+ Room quality was ok. Not too big, not too small.

- The beds felt small. The "double" was two single 90cm beds pushed together to form a double bed. Unfortunately they easily slipped apart.

+ DVD-player (we could not find the remote though but could play movie anyway)

+ Bathroom very good (with shower), recently restaured.

+ Big plus for the breakfast which is ecological. You won't find any cheap bacon from Danish mistreated pigs here.

+ Dinner buffe is included in the price which is nice added bonus.

- A bit noisy in the dinner room for my taste. It turned out when we checked in a family with small children also had checked in and their infant enjoyed yelling out loud. Maybe the hotel could had used sound eliminating material in the roof of the dinner room.

- Description of the room says "access to wireless internet" or "free wireless internet" depending on where you read. Unfortunately I interpreted this as internet was included in the room charge. It turned out though it was an extra SEK 100 for each 24 hour period. Way too much unless you really intend to stay in the room all day.

- No minibar or safe deposit in the room

o LCD-TV on the wall had only analogue TV which usually means bad picture quality on LCD-TV. This time was no exception, especially on SVT 1 & 2. They should had used digital TV instead (the TV has tuner for digital network built in but it needs an antenna).

o Maybe location of the hotel could be more spot on but then we probably would had to pay more. If you take a taxi, no problems. If you take bus then you have to walk 500 metres. It is easy to find though. No busy road means you can sleep at night.

To sum up, very good hotel and the breakfast (not the noise) is very much appreciated.

After trouble at check-in and small room, be aware that the curtains don't cover windows and are very thin. Rooms facing the sun will mean little sleep, we had about 5 hours and then the sun lights up the room. Breakfast is adequate, but not 4 star.
