Another hotel I do NOT want to share, another review I don't want you to read because I want to keep this oasis all for myself.
We 3 people stayed in a total of 4 rooms over two stays of 2 days each, taking SAS' fantastic business class flights this time to get to and from Europe. First time for us for SAS and Sweden, we thought we'd try different hotels coming and going.
Instead, we canceled the Sheraton in favor of staying again at King's Garden.
The Sheraton is probably nice, rooms are bigger, across the street from Central train station, the Radisson Blu is practically in Central Station, and the train is super convenient- as opposed to the taxis, which are a problem.
Need to know: Taxis are full of scams, there IS a flat rate from ARN, and its posted everywhere but in Swedish. I think it was 535 SEK. Otherwise its by the meter but they have lots of ways of running that up falsely, like driving around in circles. I was already sick and not aware, so I have no idea what I paid that first taxi to the hotel. Taxis rely on smart phone apps to find their way. Although they all speak English, "King's Garden" wont help, even though its named for the large famous park, so have the Swedish spelling handy to show them. Even if you have the street address, taxis often have trouble finding the hotel.
Hotel Kings Garden is tucked away on a small side street, off a one way street, our taxi driver insisted it was not possible to drive to the hotel entrance, he lied.
Everything about the Hotel Kings Garden is intelligent, comfortable and comforting.
Location: Less than a city block to everywhere. Quiet. Charming.
Rooms: Unreasonably comfortable. Our first rooms were the budget rooms. Hard to explain, everything you'd want is there- fridges with space for your things, space for your stuff by the sink, everything works, wifi, A/C etc but it didn't have the feeling that you were in a train compartment - at all. More like you've come to visit your great aunt and she's made you feel honored and welcome in her home. The beds are sumptuously comfortable inviting you to sleep, sleep, sleep. The views were all interesting, even if you were looking at a wall, it was a pretty wall. And bless those blackout curtains. Our second rooms were huge and elegant with chandeliers, fabulous. I still love those budget rooms. My guess is that every room is terrific.
Need to know: Bring eye shades, they do help with the constant light.
Breakfast: Exceptional. They have everything and they are generous and timely replenishing the lovely buffet, they welcome you every minute including us last minute stragglers. We didn't have time to try the restaurant but I'm sure its great.
Decor: Normally I wouldn't even mention decor, but this place is gorgeous. I think the story was something about it being a private house of a very rich person that was turned into a hotel.
Staff: A hotel with all of this going for it could do well with the usual staff of self-important, disaffected types, but this staff would make a hovel a wonderful place to stay. Excellent communication by email before our stay, every person was valued and valuable, you get the feeling they are respected by the hotel owners and carry that respect on to their guests. Many hotels tout their "family" and call themselves "boutiques" but this one really is all of that. I don't want to tell you how much they extended themselves for us because I worry that people will arrive with unreasonable demands. Still, a few examples- but please do not be a jerk here, OK?
-We arrived on separate flights from different countries and we couldn't find our friend due to her flight being delayed and various complications. I tried everything and got nowhere. I asked for help. Front desk staff used her knowledge from previous job working for the airlines to find a human being at the airport who had access to all the information and let me know exactly where and when our friend had arrived.
-Housekeepers obey the dnd sign, have no trouble coming later to attend the rooms, and they don't bang the doors and chat in the hall. Rooms are spotless.
-As I was too impatient to wait for the front desk to finish with the people checking in, I asked the gentleman cleaning the breakfast tables for directions. He stopped his work and explained clearly how to get where we were going.
-Additionally they seamlessly communicated every need we had to each other, surprising us with how easy everything became for us.
-Also, each person was so interesting I ended up staying up and chatting with them on various subjects.
My new problem is the SAS schedule suits me better flying to Copenhagen, so I need to find an excuse to go to Stockholm just to stay at the King's Garden hotel. I truly miss it and the people there, coming down to breakfast in that gorgeous dining room with the lovely food and people serving and those great big coffee cups and cappuccino machine (to make cappuccino, I think it was push twice for Americano), tucking in to those comfy beds at night...
I miss you wonderful people at Kings Garden!
