Owner description: THE WORLD'S ORIGINAL ICE BAR ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL Stockholm is the world's first permanent bar made of ice, built in 2002. Every year in April, the interior and design is renewed with fresh ice from Torne River and skilful ice sculptors from ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi in the very north of Sweden. ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL Stockholm is open all year and has a constant temperature of -7 degrees celsius (19 degrees fahrenheit). The interior is made out of sculpted ice from the arctic Torne River, just like the glasses your drink is served out of. The bar has room for up to 60 people. The entry fee includes a cocktail and a visit lasts about 40 minutes. Children are welcome, and are served a colourful kids' drink. ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL Stockholm is centrally located on Vasaplan, next door to Stockholm Central Station and the airport shuttle train Arlanda Express. Nordic C Hotel is located in the same building as ICEBAR Stockholm. Since it opened in 2002, the ice bar has become a popular attraction in Stockholm, attracting both tourists and locals who want a slice of the arctic north in downtown Stockholm.

We live in Medina, OH. a small city south of Cleveland. In 2008 we were on a trip to Scandinavia and were in Stockholm. We decided to go to the Absolut Ice Bar. While enjoying our drinks out of ice cups, a couple overheard us talking and asked if we were from the U.S. We replied yes and they asked where we were from. Normally I just say, "Thirty miles south of Cleveland." But
my husband said, "Medina." The man said, "Oh, I've been to Medina several times." I said, "Get out of here! What were you doing in Medina?" He explained that he and the woman he was with worked for Gevalia Coffee Company and that Plastipac in Medina made their packaging. This is just one of several times we have had an encounter like that when traveling in foreign countries.

We didn't really want to spend nearly $30 each to experience this, but were so glad we did! Where else can you go into a room totally made of ice, drink your drinks out of glasses made of ice, and take pictures through facial cutouts that are of arctic animals in ice? It was such a novelty and fun to communicate with all the other cold and crazy people inside! Do it!

to say you've done it ! It's that kind of experience. We booked for 5.15 and went in earlier, because there were only two others in there.
We put on our capes and gloves, chose our cocktails and then laughed and took photos ! Looked at the " ice sculptures" and then...... a large party of other tourists came in - Japanese I think and they were so excited. They took photos of each other and then of us !!! It was so funny with all the cameras flashing, the people laughing and we all enjoyed ourselves, but clearly it's a group experience ! Just watching each other !
It's in the Nordic Light Hotel by the Arlanda Express point in the station.
Now we've done it, we needn't go back, but we're glad we visited !

The Icebar is a curiosity and much smaller than anticipated. You are kitted out with capes and gloves but in actual fact it isn't that cold. It is quite expensive but the price includes a drink of Ligonberry Vodak served in glass made of ice. Some of the ice walls have interesting carvings and the plain ones have wonderful swirling patterns. You are in for around 20 minutes making it quite pricey but there again you have to factor in the novelty factor. You do get some great photographs though.

There is so much to see and do in beautiful Stockholm, but taking an hour out of the day for the Absolute Ice Bar is well worth the time. For around $25.00 you get outfitted in a weird blue with white fur lined cape with mittens attached and are ushered into a rather small bar where everything (as advertised) is made of ice. You receive one drink of your choice (surprisingly strong and served in an ice glass of course) and can get more for an additional price if you desire. Everyone is allowed 40 minutes in the bar but we were so cold we drank our drinks, took our photos, and got out. It is advisable to make reservations in advance which is easy to do on line. There was a fairly steady stream of tour buses with reservations, and we saw people who had walked up, expecting to go in, turned away. One of our group didn't show up and that money was refunded...unexpected but very nice.
