Hotel Rival is perfectly located in the youthful and artsy Södermalm area of Stockholm. The hotel is close to many wonderful restaurants, bars and cafes, and is a walking distance from most Stockholm sightseeing attractions. It is more hip and modern then some of the more classic, “old-school” hotels located in Northern parts of the city, and has a fun boutique feel and personality. The hotel manages to embrace the joyful spirit of Abba, without going over to the cheesy side of pop.

The rooms are tiny but comfortable, with a great bathroom that includes a rainfall shower and speakers so you can listen to “Mamma Mia” in the morning or “Dancing Queen” when getting ready for a night on the town. Or you can skip the Abba and put on another one of the CD’s that comes with the room (or listen to your own CD or ipod). The bed is very comfortable, and if you want even more fluff, the hotel offers a complementary pillow menu. Another nice touch is the free movie rental offered at the front desk – in case you get stuck with a rainy day (like we did). It is also nice to have free wifi in the room.

Service is pretty good, although a little on the pretentious side depending on who is on shift. Some of the front desk people are very helpful and can give you dining and sightseeing ideas that you can’t find in your Lonely Planet. The breakfast buffet is plentiful, and well worth it if you are planning a long day of sightseeing. You can also have a-la-carte breakfast at the café. The hotel bar is nice for an after-dinner drink.

We stayed at both Hotel Rival and Hotel Diplomat during our vacation in Stockholm, and for us, Hotel Rival was certainly the favorite. If you prefer more quiet and elegant accommodations closer to Djurgården and the museums, go for Hotel Diplomat or Grand Hotel. If you want a youthful, modern and fun ambiance, choose Rival.

We stayed here on a two week trip to Sweden. We spent 3 night at the Hotel Rival. The staff was super friendly and very helpful. The helped with all our bags and suitcases. The rooms were super clean and I can't say enough about the bathrooms WOW the shower and tub were to die for. Breakfast was free and great as well. Also we loved the location; there was a park in front of the hotel that was very peaceful and quiet. You were only about a 10 min walk from old town and all the sights. I would recommend this place to anyone.

We had a fantastic stay at the Hotel Rival.
The hotel was very stylishly decorated and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
We had a standard room which was small but cosy, and we loved all the extra care and attention that they afford their guests - a free film service with DVDs delivered to your door, a Sony Playstation , and even a menu of different types of duvet/pillow combinations.
The bar/cinema/theatre was always buzzing, often with live music, the cafe a great place for lunch, and the buffet breakfast - although expensive - was really delicious.
The Rival was situated in a pretty trendy area of Stockholm with lots of nice cafes and shops very close by.
Overall the Hotel Rival was a lovely place for a weekend break and we'd thoroughly recommend it.

I don't even really like ABBA, but my wife does, and this hotel just looked too cool to pass by. We were passing through town and decided to splurge for a couple of nights - good thing; this was probably the coolest boutique hotel we've stayed at so far.

The beds were amazing, the room service very nice, and the pillow menu was as awesome as it sounds. Definitely staying here on our next trip to Stockholm.

We stayed three nights for a birthday long weekend at the Hotel Rival in Stockholm. This is a fun place full of colour and happenings, but if you have a superior room (or above) overlooking the courtyards at the back of the building then any noise from events in the hotel itself or the lovely Mariatorget square at the front, is completely deadened. We were not disturbed at all, even by loud music on Saturday night. Room 426 is a good size and has a lovely horse chestnut tree immediately outside the large picture window. Bed was fantastically comfortable with every sort of pillow imaginable available if wished. Bathroom was compact but shower was roomy with two sorts of heads, and best of all there was a magnifying mirror and a night light so that night-time loo visits were not a stumble in the dark affair. Decor is modern, witty and Abba inspired and the carpets in the corridors (different on each floor apparently) are works of art in themselves. Breakfast buffet is a feast for eyes as well as stomach being plentiful, tasty and artfully arranged. We also had an excellent dinner in the Bistro one night and two lunches in the delightful cafe on the ground floor. Only duff note was a slightly unhelpful receptionist on arrival, but otherwise staff very pleasant, helpful and of course speaking perfect English. The area around the hotel is full of small shops, craft workshops and lovely old buildings. Great to walk around and also a very short distance from Gamla Stan, the old centre of the city. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to return.

Spent one night here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Arrived around 11.30 after an overnight train ride. Was allowed to check in properly and not just asked to leave cases and return later. Nice cafe next door for lunch and good food in restaurant in evening. Friendly staff, good location. Cannot fault it..

I was in town for the Midnattsloppet 10 K race and Hotel Rival was perfect for me in every way in the heart of lovely Söddermalm. I loved my room (loudspeakers in the bathroom!!!), and the breakfast buffet was excellent!
