Hotel Rival
Ranked #2 of 155 Hotels in Stockholm
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 3, 2007

We stayed at Rival over New Year's Eve (Stockholm really is a New Year's Eve city!) and our stay was perfect from the first to the last minute. Due to a cancellation of our flight we had to change our booking only a few days before we arrived, but they handled everything extremely professional and friendly. The Hotel is close to the tube station "Mariatorget" on the red line. This station is only three stops away from the Central Station which makes the journey from the airport really comfortable (just take the bus or express train from Arlanda and change to the tube at the Central Station). Our standard room was located at the 5th floor which meant absolutely no noise from the bar area - even on New Year's Eve. We loved the little extras like the crisp bed linen, the possibility to rent DVD's at the reception, the free internet access at the lobby etc. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. They provided us with tips for New Year's Eve like the best places to watch the fireworks etc. The buffet style breakfast was extensive with the possibility to order pancakes, eggs and most important - decent coffee, cappuchino etc. We also had a really nice dinner at the Bistro one evening. As there seemed to be many locals you did not get a "hotel restaurant feeling" at all. I would definitly stay at Hotel Rival again.

We came to Hotel Rival for New Year. We booked up at the beginning of December and a room was available for us.
I thought that the price of the hotel was very reasonable considering it had been voted number one ranked hotel in Stockholm! The hotel is centrally located and is beautifully laid out. The thing that made our stay were the staff and the free hot drinks/ice and water and biscuits on the 4th floor!! The staff were so helpful, totally understood our needs and you really felt that they cared. They helped us get a taxi booked in the early hours of New Years Day when all the slots were booked as they have a good relationship with Taxi Stockholm who are one of the best ranked taxi firms in the world!! Anyway, back to the hotel....the standard room was a standard size, but it was so fresh looking and comfortable you didnt mind and the room had a flat screen TV which made the hotel and room feel very modern! I dont feel that there is anything that I would need to warn anyone NOT to do except that whether or not breakfast is included in your room rate, make sure you go to the 1st floor to actually eat the breakfast buffet in the restaurant. You get LOADS more for your money than if you get it delivered to your room and you get more of a selection. I couldnt fault this hotel as our New Year was the most memorable EVER!

Stayed for 2 nights with 2 kids and loved it. We have a dietary requirement for our younger daughter and the kitchen was always more than happy to make her special meals, and cook some of the foods we travel with....love that when travelling. Plenty of space in our room with extra beds and a manageable walk into the old town and ice skating rink. Superb local restaurtant recommendations from the front desk..in particular Harmes (vege buffet) and East (modern Japanese). So handy with the hotels cafe next door! Will go again.

Very nice hotel, with a special atmosphere. Loved everything about it, location, service, food; all was nice! Just one little thing annoyed me: Why can't they have doublebeds that really are doublebeds instead of two singles pushed together? At least mount a clamp to keep the two beds together. It wouldn't cost much to amend this, but they haven't..... Other than that; great hotel and can be recommended.

We stayed for five nights at the Rival in Sodermalm and loved every minute of it. The location is so nice. We could walk to the ferries to take us to all of the attractions (Vasa Ship/ Skansen) plus it is across the street from a wonderful park filled with families enjoying themselves. There is a tube stop easy walking distance away as well as walking distance from the old city.

The rooms were big enough for us to add a roll away bed for our child. We had a room which overlooked the park with a nice balcony. The buffet breakfast was included with our room in their comfortable restaurant. The breakfast also included speciality coffees and omelets for the asking. The staff is especially nice and they had free internet access in the lobby.

The only drawback was pointed out in earlier reviews--on the weekend the hotel is quite the happening place so it can be loud very late into the night/morning. This did not overcome the positive points so we would definitely stay there again.

Don't miss the overlook three blocks north overlooking Gamla Stan.

Checked in on a short notice after cutting our stay short at the Clarion Stockholm. And what a difference. At the same price for a DeLuxe room, Rival outperforms Clarion Stockholm in every aspect except maybe room size.

Friendly staff, common areas (bar, café, lobby etc.) that make you feel like you could stay in the hotel all day, a nice restaurant and wonderful rooms. The DeLuxe room we booked had a very nice view of Mariatorget, a balcony, nice bed, very good storage space for clothes/bags, big LCD TV and DVD with CD:s/DVD:s in the room and more to rent at the front desk. The bathroom had both shower and tub and a good assortment of amenities. And you could watch the TV or listen to the music while in the tub. By the way, most of the furniture is designer furniture and this gives the room a very smart feeling.

Great hotel all round, incredibly friendly staff, funky bar, excellent breakfasts with good coffee (very rare in most hotels I find!), great location and fun rooms. The rooms are a little small but perfectly designed with everything you would need, would highly recommend with no drawbacks at all (and I am fussy!
