“A terrific hotel in a great location”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

We loved staying at the Hotel Rival in Stockholm. Alongside such a pretty park, the hotel is ideally located within easy walking distance of the old part of Stockholm and within 200 metres of the nearest underground station. The staff was extremely helpful and our room was clean and well maintained. We would not hesitate to book a room at Hotel Rival if we returned to Stockholm in the future.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the park are more expensive, but well worth the money.

We are so grateful to have been recommended this perfectly magical hotel in the heart of Stockholm. It is surrounded by many bars and restaurants and is walking distance to the Old Town and all places of interest. It is in the neighbourhood where the Stieg Larsson trilogy was written and there is a walking tour dedicated to the sites of interest. The staff are superb: starting with the front desk, then the all knowledgeable concierge - Sean Naughton and the restaurant staff (including Justin). The breakfast is opulent, the rooms large and spacious (with add ons like list of CDs, different kinds of pillows on demand - including a hot buckwheat pillow, coffee/tea on demand on the fourth floor near the computers with printer). The cafe was also very nice - self service with a lot of choices. The artsy decor is simply amazing, the bar scene is very popular with a DJ most nights.

Room Tip: I travelled with my 87-year old mother, so we had a room with wheel chair acces, plus close to the e...

Hotel Rival is a great hotel. The staff is friendly and very efficient. The rooms are large for Sweden and very attractive. The decor is extremely artsy and sort of makes you feel like you're in an abba video. The overall effect is charming and it works. The Bar and restaurant are both very good and the hotel/rooms were spotless. Rival is situated in an up and coming area somewhat away from most tourist attractions (as an New Yorker I'd compare it to Brooklyn). While the location is a little out of the way it's not inconvenient because Stockholm is very compact and walkable with good transportation options.

Room Tip: I would recommend getting a room overlooking the park.

If you love a hi class designer hotel that doesn't make you feel inferior just because you're not wearing a suit and tie, this is your place to stay. High class rooms and a very nice breakfast buffe. Located in the "Södermalm" part of Stockholm surrounded by a lot of nice little restaurants.

Room Tip: The top suites have beutiful small balconys with a view of the park below.

Had a great one night stay here. Rooms were comfortable and attractive. Good in room facilities - great shower, crabtree and evelyn toiletries, even an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe and proper full size hairdrier (as as girl with a lot of hair - this is a rarity!). They provided DVDs and CDs for entertainment (you can also get alternatives) and even a 'pillow menu' with about 5 varieties of pillow to choose from. Restaurant food was good (not cheap for UK but standard for Sweden) and buzzing atmosphere in adjoining bar. Breakfast was brilliant and had a tasty good value lunch in rival cafe the next day. Staff friendly efficient and helpful. Good location. Near shopping areas, short walk to photographic museum, ostermalm food hall and old town. Central station walkable but metro station a stone's throw away (3 stops to central station) if you have bags. Recommended.

We tagged two days stop over here to our Arctic adventure. We took a room upgrade in the front overlooking the square, some have balconies. The hotel and staff are excellent and the concierge knowledgeable, very helpful and full of suggestions. Rooms are great, check out your pillow menu. Superb shower, bath and a good hair drier for the ladies. Everything you would wish from a really nice well-appointed city hotel. It was busy and the bars can get crowded.

We started with walking (15 - 20 mins) over the bridge to the old town and watched the daily changing of the guard at the palace. Having seen this at Buckingham palace it makes me really proud to be British as there is little comparison. We then walked back to the bridge and took the ferry (£10 each way) for the 10 minute run across the harbour to see the Vasa museum. If you plan this early you can walk from the town around the harbour which is about 3 miles. The vasa is an old 1628 sailing ship that sunk in the harbour on its maiden trip with amazing similarities to the Mary Rose in Portsmouth UK.
The next day we went to Skansen www.skansen.se/en which is a huge park that is a mini Sweden with all the old cottage industries, animals, buildings and in the summer I bet a fantastic whole day out for all the family. In the winter quite a few of the attractions are closed but even so still well worth the visit. A day not to be missed.

Room Tip: An upgrade over looking the square with a balcony

Expensive, like everything in Stockholm, very lively, with great atmosphere and really friendly staff... Room was very small though, so it is better to take an upgrade if possible. What to consider - the place is really far from all the shopping and most of the restaurants and attractions.
