I was mainly interested in Sodermalm because of Steig Larsson's Millennium trilogy. I walked around and saw the main characters' apartments and other points of interest in the books. But besides that, the neighborhood provided great views of the rest of the city. It definitely had its own charm and I would recommend just walking around its hills and exploring its many cafes.

I lived at Sodermalm in a visitors' exchange apartment for a month and found it convenient, a good place to get to by the underground from Gamla Stan, the main historic center, and with many good places to dine from bars to an excellent Chinese restaurant. There are historic parks and buildings and interesting shops. A safe neighborhood for an older single woman. My living room window looked down on the house of Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite and who the Nobel Prize is named for. One can walk along the water' edge all the way to downtown Stockholm and read the histories of all the private old boats, many of them restored fishing boats, and chat with the owners sitting on deck while their children dive into the water. From this walkway, the other islands of the city are visible. In the summer, I venture that Stockholm is one of the best cities to visit in Europe. There are excursion boats leaving daily from many wharves that go to the islands of the Archipalego, small towns and old manor houses around Lake Maaleran, including the summer palace of the Royal Family and the 18th century theatre, one of only two in Europe that still has performances.

Step out of the busy lanes, head south on the seaside of the island and soak into the flowering small gardens with its small day houses, rest on benches or nearby cafe nested on the sea front and enjoy a beer and a real shrimp smorgås.

Great suburb from which to base our trip. Found a tiny little apartment, spent our days wandering the streets, drinking excellent coffees from various cafes, exploring the shops and absorbing the general atmosphere. The place to be.

Fun, relaxed, full of nice bars and decent restaurants, and a little cheaper than central stockhom too.
