Ship's Island (Skeppsholmen) used to be the Naval Base for more than four centuries including shipbuilding and docks. This all ended in 1969 when the base moved into the archipelago. I myself did most of my conscription service here and worked in the small pink castle like building with cute turrets. That used to be the HQ. Now the island is known for its museums (Modern, Architecture, East Asiatic) and a popular hostel in an old sailing ship (Chapman). It's good for strolling and has a number of old boats at its quays with interesting information on plaques.

We stayed on this little island with its lovely hotel, beautiful floating youth hostel and museums. The Museum of Architecture had a fragrant exhibition of gingerbread buildings which was clearly a community project and a first rate idea. This island was beautiful in midwinter and must be gorgeous in the spring.

Beautiful little island right in the center of the city of Stockholm. Definitely worth a visit. Great place to ride around on a bicycle.

Skeppsholmen is one of the islands of Stockholm. It is connected with Blasieholmen and Kastellholmen by bridges. It is accessible by foot from Kungsträdgården, past the Grand Hôtel and Nationalmuseum, by bus number 65, or by boat from Slussen, Djurgården or Nybroplan.

Positioned strategically at the Baltic Sea entrance to Stockholm, it has traditionally been the location of several military buildings. Today the military presence is low and several museums can be found there instead, such as the Museum of Modern Art, the main modern art museum of Stockholm, the architectural museum, in the same building, and Östasiatiska Muséet (East-Asian museum). It is also home to the Teater Galeasen. On the southern shore is the old sailing ship af Chapman which is now used as a youth hostel. Stockholm Jazz Festival is a popular annual summer event held on Skeppsholmen.

island near the centre of Stockholm which used to house the City's naval base. Very quiet, interesting architecture, and very good views of the City
