This hostel is at an incredible location, extremely well-maintained and has great amenities. You meet the most interesting people. There is a shared fridge / kitchen in the main building and a 24-hour reception desk. I slept on the boat and loved it. Remember to take your hostelling international card with you for a discount.

I was a bit wary about staying in a hostel, but the experience of sleeping on the water in an old ship was too good to pass up. Not only is the location and view amazing I was also pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and comfort of the dorms. This is a great place to stay if you plan to be out and about all day and just looking for a safe and clean place to rest your head. The only negative was that it can be quite loud in the evenings and if you are a light sleeper, as I am, you won't get much rest.

The af Chapman hostel has two major things going for it: 1) it's incredibly central location (just over the bridge from the 'mainland' to the islet of Skeppsholmen and within 10 mins walk of Gamla Stan) with views over the royal palace, and 2) some of it is on a beautiful 18th century boat, which is a fun experience.
The rooms on the boat are great. Recently refurbished, comfy beds with linen, very clean. Good shared showers and toilets in the boat. The boat's upper deck also houses a cafe bar, serving good meals and cakes. You can even take your beer outside to chill out in the sunshine looking over to Gamla Stan.
The price is very reasonable - about £25-30 a night, which is much much less than a hotel, especially so central. you pay a small premium for being on the boat (about £3 a night I think) but it's worth it. Breakfast is available from 70Kr (if you have a HI card) - it's a self service buffet with plenty of cereals, bread, toast, boiled eggs, jams, ham & cheese, plus tea, coffee and juice.
The downside of the Chapman is that they don't explain things very well. So, you have to be very clear if you want to stay on the boat itself - your reservation needs to explicitly state it's the boat, or you will get the hostel on dry land (which itself is lovely). Try using both hihostels and hostels.com for booking - one of them definitely splits out the 'on the boat' prices so you can be sure of what you're getting.
They're also not very good at explaining their services (I trekked round half the city to find a place to get a city bike access card, but then found out I could have done this at the hostel), not very good at pointing out what facilities they have (there is a big tv and lounge area beyond the kitchen). But they do have a washing machine (35kr including washing powder and tumble dryer) and free luggage storage (it's locked in a big room by key, though it's communal - if you need a locker of your own, you need to pay).
It's not a great place for socialising - the place can get overrun by German schoolchildren, but for a quirky, good value, central hostel, this is really very good.

Room Tip: Be sure that your reservation explicitly states 'boat' if you want to stay on the ship.

First thing is first, there are beds on the boat, and if you want to pay the premium, you can stay in them. There are also lots of beds on land which you can stay in for less money.
Remember that you are in Scandinavia, so wherever you go it will be expensive. This hostel includes linens and towels, which is nice in a place where many of them charge an additional fee. There is a kitchen, although it is small, and there is internet available.

In the end, staying here you can do a couple of things. If you have never stayed on a ship before and feel like paying the premium, then you should do it. How often will you get that chance? If you can't afford it, or really don't care, then the large dorm is fine, but better in the fall when it is cool at night. Remember it is a youth hostel, and part of two large organizations to boot, so that is what you will get. Regardless, there could be more bathrooms and showers, especially on the top floor.

Room Tip: You get what you pay for here, ship for $$$ not for less.

Talking jus about the hostel, I can say that it was very goog, the dorm was spacious, the bed comfortable, the bathroom and showers in a good number so you never queu. The cafeteria have good food, there is free wifi and the breakfast for an additional fee was excellent. The staff very helpful and efficient. Also the location was perfect, the bus 65 just stop a few meters from the hostel. And finally the amazing experience of being in a boat looking th city of Stockholm, it was unique and I feel that my stay was too short.
go there and enjoy it!

Room Tip: Book in advance to have places in the boat.

We stayed with our family of six in the attic room of the Skeppsholmen hostel (which is the building adjacent to the boat): it was nice, clean and relatively cheap compared to other Stockholm prices.
It has everything you need, from a breakfast room to several sitting corners, a laundry machine and tumble dryer. There is a cafeteria next to the reception as well as a small restaurant in the Chapsman boat. The only down side was the quality of the beds, which started to be a bit of a bother after a couple of nights.
The staff were very friendly and willing to make a vegetarian meal despite having none on the menu.

The island of Skeppsholmen is a nice place with a beautiful view and it is not far from Gamla Stan (Old town). There is a bus stop right outside the hostel, but most parts of Stockholm are within walking distance.

This is not only the most expensive Youth Hostel I've ever stayed at, but also one of the worst. It is well publicized in most guidebooks as the "boat hostel." However, the vast majority of beds are located on dry land. The dorm consists of a 17 bed attic, with limited ventilation. The hostel also charges for luggage storage.
